Kate’s Favorite Things

When Oprah still had her talk show, I was always interested in seeing her “favorite things” episodes because I liked seeing what cool new gadgets or items she liked to use to see if I could try it for myself. Although I write about various royal women and sometimes other celebrities whose fashion I admire, some of my most popular blog posts are ones that I have written about the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton). I can see through my WordPress  stats that the blog posts that I have written about her favorite makeup and cosmetics and posts I wrote last year about Christmas gift ideas are the ones most visited. I think people might really like to know specifically what Kate’s favorite things are. So I decided to write this blog post about some of Kate’s favorite things with either info on stuff that she loves and wears all the time that is just now available again or info about new stuff that these designers have made for the Fall 2016 season. If this post proves popular, I may make this into a series of blog posts on a few other women as well.

Bobbi Brown Makeup

So as I wrote about in my blog post about Kate’s makeup and cosmetics, Kate really likes Bobbi Brown makeup. Most of the makeup products she wore on her wedding day were by Bobbi Brown and people on Twitter have reported seeing her shopping at Bobbi Brown makeup counters for years since before she even got married. It has been five years since Kate got married and the way she does her makeup really hasn’t changed too much, leading me to believe she still favors Bobbi Brown. But I have noticed that the way Kate grooms her eyebrows is different. In pictures before she got married and when she was still a University of St. Andrews student, her eyebrows were thinner. But as eyebrow trends have changed now to favor thicker or more defined eyebrows Kate has also filled hers in more. This especially started to change when Kate did her Vogue cover.

So here are a couple of great eyebrow products by Bobbi Brown that I can imagine Kate using. This cool little compact has a nice brush and two different colors of powder for when you want to lightly fill in your eyebrows.

Find it here:

As a woman who has naturally thick and sometimes unruly eyebrows, my personal favorite eyebrow product is this eyebrow gel that you brush on with a wand that looks similar to a mascara brush. It keeps your eyebrows in place so nicely.

Find it here:

Bobbi Brown also has some really pretty makeup palettes this season. This is a great time to buy some new makeup because lots of makeup brands put together gift pallets in anticipation for the holidays. This one has both eye shadows and blushes. I can tell you that the eyeshadows in this palette look like ones that Kate wears. They are also nice neutral colors that I think would be flattering to women with any eye color.

Find it here:

Here is another makeup palette that I really like. The brushes that come with it are lovely.

And finally, this eyeshadow palette includes all of the colors that Kate likes.

According to the makeup artist who worked with Kate before her wedding day, one of Kate’s favorite products is the Bobbi Brown shimmer brick. This set includes the shimmer brick plus a really lovely, soft brush to apply it as bronzer or blush. I have also used the shimmer brick as eye shadow in the past.

Kate’s Favorite Kiki McDonough Citrine Earrings

Kate’s favorite jewelry designer is Kiki McDonough. I have written a blog post dedicated to her jewelry before that was popular. The earrings that Kate seems to re-wear the most are her citrine pieces. I think Kate must really love citrine. For a while her favorite citrine earrings were sold out. But now they are back!

Find it here:

Kate’s second favorite pair of citrine earrings are neat because they are actually interchangeable. The citrine pieces can come off of the diamond hoops and be exchanged for different colored stones.

Kiki McDonough earrings are expensive. So here are a couple of similar earrings I found for less.

When it comes to skincare, Kate’s favorite products are by Karin Herzog. Here are some examples of her skincare regime.

Christmas Gift Ideas Part 3: Royal Children and Their Favorite Things

In celebration of the holiday season, I have put together a little list of some of the favorite clothes and toys of royal children from around the world to help inspire any of my readers who may be shopping for little princes and princesses themselves. I don’t have children of my own yet, but who doesn’t love to look at little kids’ clothes and toys? They’re adorable! 🙂 Enjoy!

  1. Prince George and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge’s Clothes

Since Prince George was just an infant, his mum, the Duchess of Cambridge, has made it clear that Rachel Riley’s clothes are her favorite choice in children’s fashion. Here is a collection of some Rachel Riley clothes that are available right now that are either exactly what George and Charlotte have worn or similar.

Prince George Sailor

Prince George wore a cute pair of Rachel Riley sailor dungarees on his very first royal tour to Australia with his parents. The dungarees are currently available in two colors in limited sizes. This light blue:

Which can be found here:

And the same dark blue pair that George wore.

Sailboat Shortalls

It can be found here:

When George was a little baby he would often wear onesies like this one:

Princess Charlotte white

Unfortunately, we have only seen two official portraits of Princess Charlotte. One was the day of her christening, and the other was when she was first brought home from the hospital. Here is a similar all white baby outfit that I think is really cute.

Rachel Riley dress and bloomers

You can see it here:

George has been photographed wearing lots of cardigans like this one which I love. The little dogs on it are really cute and the red color would be great for the holidays.

See it here:

Obviously we do not know what Charlotte will be wearing for her very first Christmas but if I can make a prediction I would say that something like this little sweater would be a safe bet. It has been reported that Kate will not dress Charlotte in a dress until she is one year old, which is a royal tradition. I like the little deer on this sweater. They are not specifically Santa’s reindeer but I think it kind of looks that way.

However, if Kate changes her mind there are lots of really cute Rachel Riley dresses available. And if you wanted to get your little princess one here is a nice selection. This pretty blue dress has cute smocking on the front.

I like this navy blue dress as well. It would look cute with white bows in a little girl’s hair.

This velvet trim tweed skating coat is for older little girls but I can imagine Charlotte wearing this in the next year or two. Princess Estelle of Sweden wears pretty little coats like this all the time. It has a bit of a classic, Victorian feel to it. Very pretty.

This little girl’s sparkle tulle dress is so sweet and delicate.

I also love this blue dress and little white hearts.

This is another pretty little outfit I would love to see Charlotte wear. It has a cute bunny pattern and small polka dots.

Prince George Soldiers Sweater

For a photo shoot last year, Prince George wore a sweater vest by Rachel Riley with a cute little soldier pattern on it. That sweater does not seem to be available anymore. However, Rachel Riley did make a pair of dungarees with a similar pattern.

You can find them here:

Rachel Riley has a beautiful red tartan dress available this season. This is the type of dress I hope to see on Charlotte as she grows older. I think all little girls have worn a tartan dress during the holidays at some point in their lives so it seems to be a fashion right of passage.

Find it here:

And finally, although there is no way for us to know what kind of pajamas George will be wearing on Christmas morning I like these British soldier patterned Rachel Riley pjs. It seems like something Kate would dress George in.

2. Queen Elizabeth’s Doll Pram

When it comes to toys, I have found some inspiration in museum exhibits, since Royals tend to use the same types of toys for generations within their family. Royalty is all about maintaining tradition, after all. In particular, I discovered some heartwarming pictures of a little display of Queen Elizabeth II’s dolls. You can see a curator arranging the display in the picture below.

Queen Elizabeth's Dolls and Pram

The dolls are beautiful. But I especially love the little traditional English pram that Elizabeth used for her dolls. You can see the little Princess Elizabeth using the tiny wicker doll pram in the picture below.

Queen Elizabeth with Pram

Considering how traditional Prince William and Kate seem to be I have no doubt that when it comes the time to purchase big kid toys for Princess Charlotte the will probably buy her a pram to go with her dolls. Doll prams can be in the thousands of dollars, almost as much as real baby prams as a matter of fact, but I have managed to find some really sweet and affordable doll prams for under $100 each. Starting with this sweet pink doll pram from Pottery Barn website.

Find it here:

I also love this pink pram that is a 3 in 1 doll pram, carrier, and stroller for $59.99. Really cute and fun.

See it here:

And although a lot of little girls will probably love the pink options I found, the most traditional or ‘authentic’ choice would probably be this navy blue version since most royal prams have been navy blue for many generations.

Find it here:

For Princess Charlotte’s christening the little princess was strolled to the christening in the same pram that Queen Elizabeth used for two of her sons. You can see it is a dark navy blue like the toy I linked to above.

Princess Charlotte's Christening

And here is another cute dark blue options. But this one is a nice compromise because it has pink trim and what looks like a little diaper bag. I really like the swirly handles on this one. It looks like fun! And the best part is it’s just $49.99, making it the least expensive one I found.

I kept help but finish this section of the article with one of my favorite pictures of Diana, Princess of Wales as a child in her pram. It was probably used in the Spencer family for years. It looks like an antique. I can’t think of anything more representative of British royal childhood than this.

3. Danish Julekalender ( Yule Calendar) and gavekalender (Gift Calendar)

The Danish royal family-and Danish people in general- have picked up on the German tradition of advent calendars, or Yule Calendars as they are called in Denmark. The most popular being Gift Calendars, advent calendars with little drawers or boxes with room for 24 little presents. The presents are normally little candies or chocolate but some boxes are big enough for a tiny yo-yo or, ball, or really little stuffed animal. If you buy a good quality advent calendar they can be used for many years and many are so pretty they became an essential element in your Christmas decorations. I just bought a brand new wooden German advent calendar this year and I plan on putting it out every year as a new tradition.

Here are some really pretty gift calendars that I like. Some of the really collectible ones by places like Erzgbirge Palace can be $700 be these are much more affordable. The first one is in the shape of a Christmas tree and the individual boxes are deep enough for a nice sized treat each day.

This wooden advent calendar has a really pretty fireside scene on it. I like the fact that it has little boxes inside that are long enough for candy canes.

And last but not least, this advent calendar is special because it’s actually musical so each day when you open a new door it plays a song. What kid wouldn’t love that?

4. Norwegian Sweaters

Like other Scandinavian royal families, the Norwegian royals know a thing or two about keeping warm during the winter. But more than any other realm, Norway has a reputation for having iconic knitwear. The Norwegian royals have often been seen wearing “Dale of Norway” sweaters and hats and I found a few nifty examples.

Norwegian Christmas

This pink child’s sweater has the traditional Norwegian pattern knitted on the front. It is by Dale of Norway, which is a company that specializes in authentic hand knitted Norwegian designs. It can be really expensive but I found a few kids’ sweaters on Zappos.com that are more affordable. This one also comes in a few other colors like red and black.

And here is another sweater in black and white. I like that it has a traditional, folk pattern and color neckline. Very stylish.

Dale of Norway black and white

Dale of Norway also makes some really neat hats. Here are a few examples. This one comes in black with a white pattern (as you can see in the picture) but you can also choose to buy one that is white with the pattern in black.

This example is navy blue and white. It’s a traditional knitted pattern that Dale of Norway has been making since the 1950s.

And one final example. I like that the hats are unisex designs. Princess Mette-Marit loves hats like these.

Christmas Gift Ideas Part 2: Royal Ladies and Their Favorite Things

To help us all get into the holiday spirit, here is the second installment of “Christmas Gift Ideas” inspired by royal women’s favorite things. In case you are shopping for a lady this year and need some regal ideas. Or, you could be a lady yourself who wants to conveniently share this blog post with your family and friends as a not-so-subtly hint about what you may like to receive this Christmas. 😉

Princess Victoria Wedding day

  1. Princess Victoria of Sweden’s Cameos

First of all, like many ladies I am obsessed with jewelry. I received a beautiful gold cameo necklace surrounded by pearls as a Christmas gift when I was 17 and it is one of my favorite pieces of jewelry. So when Princess Victoria of Sweden married her longtime love, Daniel Westling, in 2010 I was surprised to see her wear a gorgeous cameo tiara on her wedding day. Each individual cameo on her tiara on surrounded by pearls just like my cameo necklace which made me feel pretty special that I had something that looked royal, too. 🙂

This particular cameo necklace has been a traditional wedding tiara for many Swedish royal brides including Victoria’s mother, Queen Silvia. Apparently, this tiara was actually a gift from Napoleon Bonaparte to Empress Josephine so it has a long and romantic history. There are earrings to match, which you can see both Victoria and Silvia wearing on their wedding days, along with a necklace that Silvia is wearing in the more recent picture.

I love cameos because they add a touch of old fashioned romance yet they never go out of style because they are classic, elegant, and regal. Most royal families throughout Europe have cameos in their jewelry collection so it is an appropriate gift for a lady that likes a more classic or vintage style.

Here are some pretty cameo earrings. They are sterling silver and created white sapphire on sale for $32. Picture is a link.

I also really like these cameo earrings with dangling pearls.

They can be found via this link:

Or, if you wanted to splurge, Dolce and Gabbana has made some great cameo jewelry this season including these gold-plated, faux pearl and resin clip earrings.

And you can find them here:

And they have a matching necklace to go with it!

I really, really love this beautiful Del Gatto carnelian pendant that can also be worn as a brooch. I like that the lady in the cameo has a little diamond necklace. So pretty.

2. Princess Diana’s Perfume

Like most women, Princess Diana experimented with many different perfumes throughout her life. But according to her former butler, Paul Burrell, Diana’s favorite perfume after her divorce was 24 Faubourg by Hermes. Here is the official description for the fragrance:

“A novel composed by Maurice Roucel in 1995, 24, Faubourg is an invitation to travel, with the sun as its destination. A sparkle of white flowers in the top notes, the radiance of a floral heart enveloped in irises, woods and mystery, while vanilla and ambergris set the tone for the sillage.”

It would make a beautiful gift for anyone who loved Diana or for ladies who just enjoy elegant perfumes. You can find it here:

3. The Duchess of Cambridge’s Favorite Makeup

According to numerous sources like Women’s Day, Kate really enjoys using Urban Decay’s ‘Naked’ eye shadow palette. And she’s not the only one. “Naked” by Urban Decay has long been a favorite go-to eyeshadow palette for many celebrities. The pigments are neutral but long lasting. And it has 12 different colors which leaves room for some experimentation. It’s a really great palette.

According to the makeup artist who helped Kate with her makeup for her wedding day, Kate really loves Bobbi Brown’s shimmer brick in “Bronze”. I love it too and have used it myself in the past. But I didn’t know at the time that it was a bronzer so I used it as eye shadow and it was a really pretty light, shimmer eye shadow. So it can be used as both. Bobbi Brown also makes some lighter, pink shades for their shimmer bricks that can be used as a contouring blush or as eye shadow.

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Bronze

You can find the shimmer brick here:

And finally, Kate loves Bobbi Brown’s “Crystal” gloss and wore it on her wedding day on top of her lipstick to give her lips some shine. One great tip that makeup artists have suggested when using this clear gloss is that you should use lip liner and lipstick as normal and the take this clear gloss and use it right in the middle of your lower lip to give the illusion of fuller lips. You can also use it all over your entire lips over lipstick as a way of toning bright or dark lipstick. Finally, this “Crystal” gloss can be worn by itself without any lipstick at all.

4. Queen Elizabeth’s Lipstick

If you are looking for a good lipstick to go with Kate’s favorite clear gloss, according to an article by the Telegraph the Queen uses Clarins lipstick and has been seen applying it in public. She carries it with her in her handbag and will touch up her makeup in full view of photographers. See the article here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/queen-elizabeth-II/10987809/Whats-inside-the-Queens-1000-handbag.html

The lipstick that the Queen appears to be using is this one. She has always favored darker shades that flatter her fair skin.

5. Princess Mary’s Favorite Coat

And finally, I think that Crown Princess Mary of Denmark’s favorite Diane Von Furstenberg wool coat would make an excellent gift. Mary has such impeccable style and this coat has a great classic, simple silhouette that she has worn numerous times. Very chic.

And lo and behold, I have found the same exact coat for sale for 25% off in black AND red! Score!

Christmas Gift Ideas Part 1: Royal Ladies and Their Favorite Things

Now that Halloween is over and we are preparing for Thanksgiving here in the US stores have begun to switch over to Christmas decorations. And no matter what holiday you may celebrate this season, it’s a pretty busy time of the year for shopping for your loved ones. So if you have any ladies in your life (or if you are a lady yourself) here is the first installment of a series of posts on royal women’s favorite things. You can use this as inspiration when shopping for the ladies in your life OR share this post with your friends and family as a gentle hint that you may have your eyes on one of these cool royal favorites. 😉

1. Crown Princess Mary of Denmark’s skincare:

Princess Mary Orange Dress

As a royal watcher and blogger I have been admiring Princess Mary’s pretty porcelain skin for about ten years. Since I also have super fair skin I have been curious to learn more about what products Mary uses but it has been difficult for me to figure it out up until now. Thanks to some research in royal forums I found some articles in Danish that a kind royal watcher and native Dane translated in the forum. It said that a Danish skin cosmetician named Ole Henrikson-who is a skin consultant to Hollywood stars as he lives in the United States- gave an interview stating that Princess Mary is a fan of his “3 Little Wonders” skincare kit. It is described as “A three-step daily regimen developed for an effective, easy, and healthy skincare routine to treat all major skin concerns.” I found a nice starter kit that would make a great gift!

3 Little Wonders

Find it here on sale for $72. It’s normally $110.:

2. Princess Grace’s Wedding Perfume

Grace Kelly Wedding

Fleurissimo by Creed is a perfume I have been dying to try for years since it is famously used by many royal women including Queen Elizabeth II. Creed-a perfume house that has been frequented by royalty since the Victorian era-was commissioned by the House of Grimaldi to create a special perfume specifically for Grace Kelly’s wedding day in 1956. Fleurissimo was the result. It is a floral scent that smells like a wedding bouquet. As a matter of fact, Marie-Chantal, Crown Princess of Greece reportedly sprayed some onto her wedding bouquet itself to make it more fragrant. The perfume is described as a “sumptuous floral fragrance whose notes include bergamot, tuberose, Bulgarian Rose, violet, Florentine iris and ambergris.” It is glamorous and elegant, just like Princess Grace herself. I think it would make a lovely gift for anyone who wants to smell like a princess.

You can find it at Neiman Marcus for $350 via the link below:

Or at Amazon.com, where it is significantly less expensive (picture is a link):

3. Kate’s Favorite Boots

Ever since she was a student at St. Andrews University Kate Middleton has loved her boots. Now that she is HRH the Duchess of Cambridge, that love has not seemed to wane. Although Kate has several designers that she goes to when she shops for her boots, it seems that Stuart Weitzman is one of her favorites. Here is a picture of Kate from a few years back wearing some ankle boots by Weitzman.

Kate Weitzman ankle boots

And here are two popular pairs of Weitzman ankle boots this season that look just like something Kate would wear. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see her wearing these soon.

Stuart Weitzman “Zipzipzip” Suede Ankle Bootie:

Sidearm Bootie

Weitzman Sidearm Ankle-Buckle Bootie:

Kate especially loves knee high boots. I have a theory that they are one of the few pieces of clothing that she can wear that makes her feel a little bit edgy while still maintaining the fashion standards of a member of the royal family. These boots tend to be on the expensive side but I managed to find some that are on sale. Here are two examples of Kate in Weitzman knee high boots.

These “Reserve” boots are almost exactly like what Kate is wearing with the blue coat.

The “Mixitup” boots are also like what she has worn. Angelina Jolie loves these boots, too.

4. Queen Elizabeth’s Hairbrush

We know very little about what products the Queen likes to use. However, it has been reported in many sources that the Queen has been a longtime user of Kent Hairbrushes. A quintessentially British brand that most of us Americans have never heard of, these high quality brushes are used by lots of hairdressers in the UK. But Queen Elizabeth quite famously prefers to style her own hair. You can see Annie Leibovitz mention that when the Queen sat for a portrait for her.

5. Princess Diana’s Vanity Set

The final royal favorite thing that I will discuss in this post will be a product that I can stand behind as I have had it myself for about ten years now. I have loved Princess Diana since I was a little girl, even though she passed away when I was only seven years old so I barely remember her. When I was a teenager my grandmother wanted to get me something really special for Christmas so she found out that Diana was reported to enjoy using Lady Primrose’s vanity set in “Necture,” a sweet floral scent with jasmine, apple blossoms, fresh mint, and lily as the main notes.

Princess Diana

Below is what the beautiful set looks like. Diana used Lady Primrose body creme (the round jar) and the dusting powder to set the creme. What makes this set special is that the silver lid of the body creme can be engraved. My grandmother engraved my nickname on mine. Then when you are finished with the creme you can order a refill. The glass shaker for the dusting powder also can be refilled. This is a beautiful set that is meant to be displayed on your vanity with your prettiest perfume bottles. It’s timeless and I cherish mine.

Lady Primrose

I recommend buying the Lady Primrose body cream in “Necture”, the scent Diana is reported to have loved especially when she was in her 20s and still married. I have terrible migraines so many perfumes are too much for me but I never have a problem with this creme. You rub it into your forearms, neck, and decolletage.

Picture is a link.

After you apply the creme you use the dusting silk to set the creme. Not only does it smell nice as a subtle perfume but it also makes your skin really soft.

Picture is a link.

You pour some of the dusting silk onto the large matching brush. Then you brush it onto your skin. Women have been doing this for many years and I am sure you have watched period movies where a lady will do this while sitting at her vanity.

Picture is a link.

To finish the gift I would recommend getting a tray to place the pieces in. This is the clear glass oval Lady Primrose tray.

Picture is a link

But I have a silver one and really like it. I think it looks very Victorian and I love that. Plus I think it matches the silver lid of the jar.

I hope you have enjoyed the first installment of my special Christmas Gift Ideas blog series.
