How to Dress Like a Princess for Prom for $100

Prom season is almost upon us, which means many young ladies will be searching for the perfect prom dress. Unfortunately, I never went to a prom myself. But if I had I would have probably looked to European royal ladies for inspiration. I think we all would like to look like a princess for a day, but most of us do not necessarily have a royal budget. So here are some of my favorite royal ladies wearing their best gowns along with a guide for where to find similar gowns for much less. Whether you are going to a prom, a formal wedding, or a romantic date every woman deserves to look and feel like a princess. 🙂

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

By now, most people who follow the British royal family will be familiar with Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge’s love of lace. This Alice Temperley black lace overlay dress has been one of her favorites for years. Here she is wearing the gown at the Natural History Museum in London in December of 2013.

And here is a close-up of the lace details on her dress.

This particular Temperley gown is no longer available although when it was available it probably sold for about $8,000-$9,000. However, I have found a gorgeous lookalike dress by Miusol for under $100. It comes in sizes small to 3X and you could get the black version that looks exactly like Kate’s or a red version for something a little different. It also has amazing reviews.

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands

On April 30, 2013, Crown Princess Maxima became Queen Consort Maxima of the Netherlands when her husband, Willem-Alexander, was inaugurated as king. For King Willem-Alexander’s inauguration, Maxima wore a gorgeous cobalt blue gown and matching cape by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau.

Here is a look at the gown without the cape.

I love this color and the lace overlay detailing of the bodice and sleeves. Maxima’s gown was custom made for her, so there is no way to really put a price tag on it. But this pretty gown looks similar to Maxima’s iconic inauguration gown and it is under $100.

Sizes 2 through 16 can be found via this link:

Crown Princess Victoria

Princess Victoria of Sweden is one of my favorite royal ladies. I think she is going to be an amazing queen. I also think she is very fashionable. I think this look is one of Victoria’s best. She is wearing a gown by Pronovias and a hair accessory by Jenny Packham, one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s favorite designers. The gown is an unusual color, it can appear teal or green depending on the lighting in the photo.

But I especially like the lace detailing on the neckline of this gown. It makes the sweetheart neckline seem a little more modest but still youthful.

And the hair accessory is so great. It looks regal, but not as formal as a tiara.

Here is a pretty green lookalike gown for under $100. I think it’s very elegant.

Find it here for under $100 in sizes up to a 16. It has multiple color options as well.

Ever Pretty Womens Empire Waist Open Back Formal Black Tie Dress 16 US Green

If you would like to wear a pretty hair comb to accessorize I like this one at Nordstrom.

Find it here:

Princess Madeleine of Sweden

Princess Madeleine, who happens to be Victoria’s little sister, has also worn some pretty amazing gowns. I guess style must run in the family, and it helps that she is married to a billionaire. 😉 Here is Madeleine wearing a gorgeous Elie Saab gown. It has a retro 1940s feel with some amazing beaded work throughout the gown. This is a couture piece and probably cost about $8,000-$10,000.

Princess Madeleine

When it comes to reasonably priced beaded gowns, I think that Adrianna Papell is the best way to go. This beautiful gown is on sale right now. It goes up to a size 14.

Find it here:

And this Adrianna Papell gown looks a lot like Madeleine’s gown as well. It is also on sale and is available up to size 14.

Find it here:

Princess Beatrice of York

Some ladies may prefer wearing a shorter dress for a school dance. I personally love this gorgeous Nicholas Oakwell couture white organza dress that Princess Beatrice wore to a Serpentine Gallery party. It has a lovely princess-y 1950s vibe. If you have ever watched West Side Story, you’ll know that Natalie Wood’s character, Maria, originally objected to wearing a white dress to a dance. But when she realized that probably no one else would be wearing white, she changed her mind because she knew that she would be the only one in a white dress so she would stand out more. So maybe white would be the right way to go if you want to make a bit of a fashion statement?

I also like the way that Beatrice styled her makeup with this dress. The red lipstick with subtle eye makeup completes the retro look.

Here is a pretty dress from ASOS that reminds me of Beatrice’s. It’s only $114 and is available in limited sizes.

Find it here:

The same company also makes some pretty dresses in plus sizes. This dress is similar to Beatrice’s and it is available up to a size 20.

Find it for $116 here:

Princess Sofia of Sweden

Next, we have Princess Sofia of Sweden. Like Kate Middleton, Sofia was also born a commoner. She was lucky enough to find an Orlando Bloom lookalike who just so happened to be a prince. 🙂 She marred Prince Carl-Phillip last year. Carl-Phillip and Sofia are expecting their first baby any day now.

I like the raspberry color of this gown that Sofia wore at the Nobel Peace Prize banquet in 2014.

I think that this lace dress from Modcloth is a similar color. Very feminine.

It is available in sizes 2-10 here:

The same company makes a similar dress in a 3/4 sleeve version available in sizes 8-20.

It is available on sale for $87 here:

Queen Mathilde of Belgium and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark

Speaking of Princess Sofia, at Sofia’s wedding to Carl-Phillip last year two very fashionable royal women showed up to the wedding ceremony wearing the same color. This pretty, icy light blue was also worn by the Queen Mother and Princess Diana on multiple occasions. Maybe because it photographs well? Or maybe it is because this is the color that Cinderella is associated with? Whatever the case, this color seems to be universally flattering on ladies with various hair colors and skin tones.

This dress comes in a ‘sky blue’ color that is reminiscent of the gowns that both Mathilde and Mary wore to Sofia’s wedding last year. It comes in sizes 2-18.

Find it here on sale for $89:

Mette-Marit’s Rockstar Princess Shoes

A long time ago I saw pictures of Crown Princess Mette-Marit on a visit to San Francisco and I fell in love with a gorgeous pair of edgy heels she was wearing by Valentino. Recently I also noticed Crown Princess Mary wearing the same Valentino shoes and I came to the conclusion that they were a royal favorite. But they are not cheap, averaging about $1,000 a pair, so I was hoping to find a less expensive alternative. Well, I was browsing in my local mall doing some research for a blog I am going to write on shoes for Spring 2016 when I saw a pair of shoes that I was convinced were the same ones by Valentino that I admired on Mette-Marit. But when I picked them up, much to my delight, I realized they were actually made by Arturo Chiang and are a fraction of the price. But unless someone were to examine your shoes really closely they would never be able to tell the difference because they look so much alike. When  I came home I found a link for them on line and I wanted to share them with my lovely readers. 🙂

Here is a picture of Mette-Marit wearing the heels I love. I like them because they are a good t-strap, which makes them easier to walk in in my opinion, and they have the edgy design along the strap that gives it a rock and roll vibe while still being modest. They are called “rockstud heels” and are perfect modern princess shoes. Contemporary but elegant.

Embed from Getty Images

Embed from Getty Images

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark also has a pair of Valentino rockstud heels and she LOVES them. She has worn them many times.

Embed from Getty Images

Embed from Getty Images

These shoes are also popular with movie stars such as Reese Witherspoon. Here are some pictures courtesy of the Daily Mail of her dressed casually in jeans and wearing a pair of rockstud heels. She actually has multiple pairs in many different colors but I think these were the clearest pictures. I don’t normally post paparazzi pictures on this blog but I am making an exception with these just because I like seeing that these shoes can be worn casually, not just with business casual or professional clothing. I think it helps illustrate how versatile these heels are. Mary even wore them to a semi-formal event with a lace dress in the picture above.

So now that you have seen some ladies wearing these cool shoes here are some examples of Valentino rockstud heels and where to find them. Here are some black and white ones:

Find them here for $1,100:

And here is a light pink version similar to what Mary wears.

Get them here for $1,000:

And they are available in lots of other colors, too.

And here is the lookalike pair by Arturo Chiang for only $89.99. Pretty similar, aren’t they? I think they look the most like Mary’s pair that she wears all the time. They come in two colors, “adobe”-which is sort of like a nude, this is the adobe color in the picture below- and black. I’m thinking I need a pair! They are so reasonable and look so similar to the Valentino ones!

Find them here:

Stay tuned for my larger blog post on cool shoes for Spring/Summer 2016! And if you haven’t seen it yet I have written a post on handbags for Spring that you can find here. Christmas Gift Ideas Part 2: Royal Ladies and Their Favorite Things

To help us all get into the holiday spirit, here is the second installment of “Christmas Gift Ideas” inspired by royal women’s favorite things. In case you are shopping for a lady this year and need some regal ideas. Or, you could be a lady yourself who wants to conveniently share this blog post with your family and friends as a not-so-subtly hint about what you may like to receive this Christmas. 😉

Princess Victoria Wedding day

  1. Princess Victoria of Sweden’s Cameos

First of all, like many ladies I am obsessed with jewelry. I received a beautiful gold cameo necklace surrounded by pearls as a Christmas gift when I was 17 and it is one of my favorite pieces of jewelry. So when Princess Victoria of Sweden married her longtime love, Daniel Westling, in 2010 I was surprised to see her wear a gorgeous cameo tiara on her wedding day. Each individual cameo on her tiara on surrounded by pearls just like my cameo necklace which made me feel pretty special that I had something that looked royal, too. 🙂

This particular cameo necklace has been a traditional wedding tiara for many Swedish royal brides including Victoria’s mother, Queen Silvia. Apparently, this tiara was actually a gift from Napoleon Bonaparte to Empress Josephine so it has a long and romantic history. There are earrings to match, which you can see both Victoria and Silvia wearing on their wedding days, along with a necklace that Silvia is wearing in the more recent picture.

I love cameos because they add a touch of old fashioned romance yet they never go out of style because they are classic, elegant, and regal. Most royal families throughout Europe have cameos in their jewelry collection so it is an appropriate gift for a lady that likes a more classic or vintage style.

Here are some pretty cameo earrings. They are sterling silver and created white sapphire on sale for $32. Picture is a link.

I also really like these cameo earrings with dangling pearls.

They can be found via this link:

Or, if you wanted to splurge, Dolce and Gabbana has made some great cameo jewelry this season including these gold-plated, faux pearl and resin clip earrings.

And you can find them here:

And they have a matching necklace to go with it!

I really, really love this beautiful Del Gatto carnelian pendant that can also be worn as a brooch. I like that the lady in the cameo has a little diamond necklace. So pretty.

2. Princess Diana’s Perfume

Like most women, Princess Diana experimented with many different perfumes throughout her life. But according to her former butler, Paul Burrell, Diana’s favorite perfume after her divorce was 24 Faubourg by Hermes. Here is the official description for the fragrance:

“A novel composed by Maurice Roucel in 1995, 24, Faubourg is an invitation to travel, with the sun as its destination. A sparkle of white flowers in the top notes, the radiance of a floral heart enveloped in irises, woods and mystery, while vanilla and ambergris set the tone for the sillage.”

It would make a beautiful gift for anyone who loved Diana or for ladies who just enjoy elegant perfumes. You can find it here:

3. The Duchess of Cambridge’s Favorite Makeup

According to numerous sources like Women’s Day, Kate really enjoys using Urban Decay’s ‘Naked’ eye shadow palette. And she’s not the only one. “Naked” by Urban Decay has long been a favorite go-to eyeshadow palette for many celebrities. The pigments are neutral but long lasting. And it has 12 different colors which leaves room for some experimentation. It’s a really great palette.

You can find it here:

According to the makeup artist who helped Kate with her makeup for her wedding day, Kate really loves Bobbi Brown’s shimmer brick in “Bronze”. I love it too and have used it myself in the past. But I didn’t know at the time that it was a bronzer so I used it as eye shadow and it was a really pretty light, shimmer eye shadow. So it can be used as both. Bobbi Brown also makes some lighter, pink shades for their shimmer bricks that can be used as a contouring blush or as eye shadow.

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Bronze

You can find the shimmer brick here:

And finally, Kate loves Bobbi Brown’s “Crystal” gloss and wore it on her wedding day on top of her lipstick to give her lips some shine. One great tip that makeup artists have suggested when using this clear gloss is that you should use lip liner and lipstick as normal and the take this clear gloss and use it right in the middle of your lower lip to give the illusion of fuller lips. You can also use it all over your entire lips over lipstick as a way of toning bright or dark lipstick. Finally, this “Crystal” gloss can be worn by itself without any lipstick at all.

4. Queen Elizabeth’s Lipstick

If you are looking for a good lipstick to go with Kate’s favorite clear gloss, according to an article by the Telegraph the Queen uses Clarins lipstick and has been seen applying it in public. She carries it with her in her handbag and will touch up her makeup in full view of photographers. See the article here:

The lipstick that the Queen appears to be using is this one. She has always favored darker shades that flatter her fair skin.

5. Princess Mary’s Favorite Coat

And finally, I think that Crown Princess Mary of Denmark’s favorite Diane Von Furstenberg wool coat would make an excellent gift. Mary has such impeccable style and this coat has a great classic, simple silhouette that she has worn numerous times. Very chic.

And lo and behold, I have found the same exact coat for sale for 25% off in black AND red! Score!

Christmas Gift Ideas Part 1: Royal Ladies and Their Favorite Things

Now that Halloween is over and we are preparing for Thanksgiving here in the US stores have begun to switch over to Christmas decorations. And no matter what holiday you may celebrate this season, it’s a pretty busy time of the year for shopping for your loved ones. So if you have any ladies in your life (or if you are a lady yourself) here is the first installment of a series of posts on royal women’s favorite things. You can use this as inspiration when shopping for the ladies in your life OR share this post with your friends and family as a gentle hint that you may have your eyes on one of these cool royal favorites. 😉

1. Crown Princess Mary of Denmark’s skincare:

Princess Mary Orange Dress

As a royal watcher and blogger I have been admiring Princess Mary’s pretty porcelain skin for about ten years. Since I also have super fair skin I have been curious to learn more about what products Mary uses but it has been difficult for me to figure it out up until now. Thanks to some research in royal forums I found some articles in Danish that a kind royal watcher and native Dane translated in the forum. It said that a Danish skin cosmetician named Ole Henrikson-who is a skin consultant to Hollywood stars as he lives in the United States- gave an interview stating that Princess Mary is a fan of his “3 Little Wonders” skincare kit. It is described as “A three-step daily regimen developed for an effective, easy, and healthy skincare routine to treat all major skin concerns.” I found a nice starter kit that would make a great gift!

2. Princess Grace’s Wedding Perfume

Grace Kelly Wedding

Fleurissimo by Creed is a perfume I have been dying to try for years since it is famously used by many royal women including Queen Elizabeth II. Creed-a perfume house that has been frequented by royalty since the Victorian era-was commissioned by the House of Grimaldi to create a special perfume specifically for Grace Kelly’s wedding day in 1956. Fleurissimo was the result. It is a floral scent that smells like a wedding bouquet. As a matter of fact, Marie-Chantal, Crown Princess of Greece reportedly sprayed some onto her wedding bouquet itself to make it more fragrant. The perfume is described as a “sumptuous floral fragrance whose notes include bergamot, tuberose, Bulgarian Rose, violet, Florentine iris and ambergris.” It is glamorous and elegant, just like Princess Grace herself. I think it would make a lovely gift for anyone who wants to smell like a princess.

You can find it at Neiman Marcus for $350 via the link below:

Or at, where it is significantly less expensive (picture is a link):

3. Kate’s Favorite Boots

Ever since she was a student at St. Andrews University Kate Middleton has loved her boots. Now that she is HRH the Duchess of Cambridge, that love has not seemed to wane. Although Kate has several designers that she goes to when she shops for her boots, it seems that Stuart Weitzman is one of her favorites. Here is a picture of Kate from a few years back wearing some ankle boots by Weitzman.

Kate Weitzman ankle boots

And here are two popular pairs of Weitzman ankle boots this season that look just like something Kate would wear. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see her wearing these soon.

Stuart Weitzman “Zipzipzip” Suede Ankle Bootie:

Sidearm Bootie

Weitzman Sidearm Ankle-Buckle Bootie:

Kate especially loves knee high boots. I have a theory that they are one of the few pieces of clothing that she can wear that makes her feel a little bit edgy while still maintaining the fashion standards of a member of the royal family. These boots tend to be on the expensive side but I managed to find some that are on sale. Here are two examples of Kate in Weitzman knee high boots.

These “Reserve” boots are almost exactly like what Kate is wearing with the blue coat.

The “Mixitup” boots are also like what she has worn. Angelina Jolie loves these boots, too.

4. Queen Elizabeth’s Hairbrush

We know very little about what products the Queen likes to use. However, it has been reported in many sources that the Queen has been a longtime user of Kent Hairbrushes. A quintessentially British brand that most of us Americans have never heard of, these high quality brushes are used by lots of hairdressers in the UK. But Queen Elizabeth quite famously prefers to style her own hair. You can see Annie Leibovitz mention that when the Queen sat for a portrait for her.

5. Princess Diana’s Vanity Set

The final royal favorite thing that I will discuss in this post will be a product that I can stand behind as I have had it myself for about ten years now. I have loved Princess Diana since I was a little girl, even though she passed away when I was only seven years old so I barely remember her. When I was a teenager my grandmother wanted to get me something really special for Christmas so she found out that Diana was reported to enjoy using Lady Primrose’s vanity set in “Necture,” a sweet floral scent with jasmine, apple blossoms, fresh mint, and lily as the main notes.

Princess Diana

Below is what the beautiful set looks like. Diana used Lady Primrose body creme (the round jar) and the dusting powder to set the creme. What makes this set special is that the silver lid of the body creme can be engraved. My grandmother engraved my nickname on mine. Then when you are finished with the creme you can order a refill. The glass shaker for the dusting powder also can be refilled. This is a beautiful set that is meant to be displayed on your vanity with your prettiest perfume bottles. It’s timeless and I cherish mine.

Lady Primrose

I recommend buying the Lady Primrose body cream in “Necture”, the scent Diana is reported to have loved especially when she was in her 20s and still married. I have terrible migraines so many perfumes are too much for me but I never have a problem with this creme. You rub it into your forearms, neck, and decolletage.

Picture is a link.

After you apply the creme you use the dusting silk to set the creme. Not only does it smell nice as a subtle perfume but it also makes your skin really soft.

Picture is a link.

You pour some of the dusting silk onto the large matching brush. Then you brush it onto your skin. Women have been doing this for many years and I am sure you have watched period movies where a lady will do this while sitting at her vanity.

Picture is a link.

To finish the gift I would recommend getting a tray to place the pieces in. This is the clear glass oval Lady Primrose tray.

Picture is a link

But I have a silver one and really like it. I think it looks very Victorian and I love that. Plus I think it matches the silver lid of the jar.

I hope you have enjoyed the first installment of my special Christmas Gift Ideas blog series.

Royal Maternity Fashion

I have never been pregnant yet myself. But I love babies, and I personally think women are really beautiful when they are pregnant. There is just something about seeing a pregnant woman that makes me smile. Maternity fashion has come a long way over the past 30 years or so. Historically speaking, there was a time when royal women were never depicted pregnant in royal portraits because it was considered bad luck. Even when Princess Mary of Denmark was pregnant just a few years ago her official royal portrait was not shown to the public until she delivered her baby safely. But long gone are the days when royal women were hidden away from the public while they were in the later stages of pregnancy. And while many royal women up to the early 20th century were not photographed showing a ‘baby bump’ things have changed dramatically. From Queen Elizabeth II and Grace Kelly in the 1950s to Princess Diana in the 80s and, most recently, Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge and the currently pregnant Princess Victoria of Sweden. Maternity fashion has become much more, well, fashionable. It used to be that women wore what looked like large potato sacks. But now maternity fashion is just as pretty as any other clothing. This blog post is inspired by the recent announcement of Princess Victoria of Sweden’s pregnancy. So while I will include some vintage or retro photos of royals from the past I will primarily focus on recent royal pregnancy fashion and what brands and designers royal women shop with when they are expecting.

Fashion Flashbacks

One of the most iconic pregnant royal women is Princess Grace. Here is a cool picture of her shopping at a maternity boutique in Paris, Tout Pour La Future Maman.

And here is a sweet picture of Grace and her prince cuddling while she was pregnant with her first baby, Princess Caroline. Grace and Ranier did not know each other well before they married and only met each other in person a few times before their engagement but reportedly one of the first things that the Prince of Monaco said to Grace when they had a private date together is that he thought she would look beautiful pregnant. How romantic!

But the most famous image of Grace is this one. She used a large Hermes bag to cover her baby bump and ever since it has been known as the “Kelly Bag.” People can go on a wait list for years to get one.

Pictures of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain pregnant are very rare as well. She tended to prefer really large, over sized coats to hide her ump completely. Very unlike the more fitted maternity wear in fashion today.

I have read that Princess Diana didn’t particularly like wearing maternity clothes and it is claimed that she said that wearing maternity wear made her feel like she was ‘wearing a circus tent’.

Current Maternity Wear

Now that we have looked at some maternity wear from the past let’s see how some royal ladies dress their baby bumps in recent years.

First, the Duchess of Cambridge. Here is a picture of Kate wearing Jojo Maman Bebe, one of her favorite maternity labels, on a visit to the Downton Abbey set when she was pregnant with Princess Charlotte.

Kate Jojo Maman

And I found the same coat!!!!! It is called the “princess” coat appropriately enough and you can get it here for about $100 depending on the size. It’s in a pretty winter white that Kate seems to favor.

But if you would like something darker as a fall coat this Jojo Maman coat in black is in a very similar, simple style.

But I personally like this eggplant color for fall. It’s such a pretty jewel tone.

Seraphine maternity dress

For this first family photo taken after Prince George was born Kate wore a maternity/breastfeeding dress by Seraphine. I found the same one! It’s called “Jolene” and can be found here for $90. It does have short sleeves, though and is in a lighter, brighter Spring/Summer color.

But Seraphine also makes the same style dress with long sleeves for fall. I like this one in a deep rose shade.

This one in purple.

And this faux wrap dress in a cool polka dot pattern.

Now, Princess Victoria recently announced her second pregnancy which makes me really, really happy. I love Princess Victoria and think her little girl, Princess Estelle, is just the cutest thing ever. For one of her first public appearances after announcing her pregnancy she wore this evening gown by Adrianna Papell even though it is not technically a maternity gown.

Adrianna Papell Princess Victoria

And here is a very similar Adrianna Papell gown. I love the square beaded pattern on the dress. It reminds me of something from the 1920s.

This Jojo Maman warp dress is for women who are pregnant OR nursing. It’s the type of dress that royal women like Kate, Victoria, and Princess Mary of Denmark like to wear after the give birth because it makes breast feeding easier.

Many articles also say that royal women like Kate like nursing tops like this one by Jojo Maman. It’s very simple and functional.

While this top is more like something Princess Mary has enjoyed wearing during her three pregnancies.

Kate and Victoria like to wear these Seraphine ‘overbelly’ maternity tights especially under the wrap dresses I have listed here.

Princess Mary of Denmark is such a stylish royal. She loves to wear ponchos whether or not she is pregnant. They happen to be fashionable this year and I think they would be great for pregnant ladies. Here are some pictures of her wearing ponchos.
Danish-Royal-Family poncho

Princess Mary beach poncho

Princess Mary poncho

Here is a pretty poncho in winter white from Seraphine.

And I really like this sweater poncho. Plaid is really in this season and this poncho is only $24! It isn’t a maternity poncho but it could work for that for sure.

This beautiful dress looks just like something Princess Mary would wear. It is definitely her style. Very elegant.

Princess Mary also really likes wearing maxi dresses when she is pregnant or even when she is not. Since I am only 5 feet tall I have never been able to pull off a maxi dress but apparently they are really popular with pregnant ladies because of how comfortable they are.

 Princess Mary maxi

Princess Mary Free People Maxi Dress

In the picture above Mary is wearing a bohemian Free People maxi dress. Here is something similar in maternity wear from  Pink Blush for $40.

Or if you would like something simple here is a maxi dress from Seraphine. It can also be used when breastfeeding.

On the other hand, Princess Mette-Marit of Norway likes a really simple, understated style. Kind of like Carolyn Basset in the 1990s. This 4 in 1 sweater from Jojo Maman looks like something she would wear. It comes in gray and navy.

And this top that is also from Jojo Maman is in great navy blue stripes, a favorite of Mette-Marit’s. I imagine that these sweaters would look great with jeans.

I hope that you have enjoyed this post!

Fall Fashion-Princess Mary of Denmark

Hey Guys,

Now that we are in the second week of August, stores are stocked up with fall fashion. Where I live it is so hot everyday it is really difficult to even imagine wearing a sweater or a coat, but August is the time to start planning your fall wardrobe! For some inspiration I have decided to start writing a series of posts called “Fall Fashion” with each post focusing on a different royal lady. I am going to look at Crown Princess Mary of Denmark first because she is one of my all time favorite fashionable royals.

Embed from Getty Images

I just absolutely LOVE this coat that Mary wore in September of 2010 during an official visit to Germany. Here is another picture that gives a better, close up few of the coat (she was visiting a zoo in Germany and got to feed penguins):

Embed from Getty Images

If you are like me you probably already have at least one black, brown, or neutral coat that you have worn for a couple of years in a row, but most people are afraid to buy a coat with a pattern on it. I say if you already have your neutral coat it’s fun to experiment with a coat that has a pattern or embroidery on it. Unfortunately I do not know who designed this coat, but I love that it has a pattern on it that almost looks like an illustration from a fairy tale, very appropriate for a princess. I especially like how she accessorized with gray shoes and a clutch bag that matches part of the design in the coat along with the red hair piece for a bit of color. She also seems to be wearing large black pearl earrings.

Embed from Getty Images

I really like this look that Mary is modeling in the picture above. Some people say you shouldn’t wear white after Labor Day but I really like winter white. I especially like how this coat is belted and how Mary paired it with a really simple brown jersey dress. Very elegant.

Next I would like to talk about this simple outfit that Mary wore on an official trip to Canada last year. It’s a classic long sleeve white blouse with a black skirt.  Very simple and chic.

 Embed from Getty Images

But what I really love about this outfit is her shoes. Check out a close up pic:

Embed from Getty Images

This must be one of Mary’s favorite pairs of shoes because I noticed her wearing them on multiple occasions including Princess Isabella’s first day of school.

I think that Mary’s may be Jimmy Choo. Here are some similar  (less expensive) shoes by Anne Klein.

This burnt orange dress that Mary wore in October a few years ago is such a perfect color for fall. I have seen this color in stores a lot lately so I think that it will be really fashionable this season. In general, royal women from around the world tend to favor bright or bold colors, not just black or white, so that they stand out more in a crowd so that people can see them easier. Bold colors also photograph better and Princess Mary had a career in public relations before becoming a princess so she is very aware of how she presents herself in public. She is always so poised and articulate when she speaks. She’s one of my favorite royal princesses. 🙂 Here are some clothes I found that are all in this same bold orange color like the one Mary wore above.
First, If you are looking for a business casual look, I found this white floral print Julian Taylor dress. This dress is nice because it has that great orange color like Mary’s dress, plus it is between $24-$58 (depending on what size you choose) so it’s pretty affordable. I also think it’s great that the dress comes in sizes 6-16. It has a cute bow on the front, too. If you click this picture you should see a cool 3D model that twirls around so you can see all angles of the dress, pretty nifty when you are shopping online.

Here is another pretty business casual dress. This time I chose it because it is a ‘petite’ size. I am only 5ft tall so I appreciate any designer who remembers to include us petite ladies when designing their clothes. This dress is Anne Klein and it has an amazing white fall leaf pattern on it that I really like. Very appropriate for fall. And if you wore it in the office or for a job interview you can put a white cardigan over it, too.

And finally, there is this tulip sleeve dress dress by London times in US sizes 14 to 22. I really like the sleeves. It has a retro 1960s feel to it.

Or you could maybe experiment with a skirt like this one by BCBG Max Azria. It’s one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s favorite designers.

And finally there is this evening look from November of last year when the Crown Princes and Princess of Denmark attended the Bambi awards.

Princess Mary looks so gorgeous in this dress! I have not read it for sure but I think I recognize this dress as an Elie Saab. Very expensive couture. Most Elie Saab eveing gowns costs about $7,000 (or more). Saab is a favorite designer of Stephanie, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg as well. But I think I am probably the most in love with her gorgeous chandelier earrings. Sooo sparkly…

Here is a sparkly beaded navy blue Adriana Papell cap sleave evening gown in a similar style.

I hope that you have enjoyed taking a look at some of Princess Mary’s fall looks and that it inspired you as you shop. Have fun! 🙂
