Summer Trend: Azure Blue

Duchess of Cambridge, SportsAid Dinner

So one of the biggest trends I am seeing in stores and on the runway this summer is azure blue. The color can be found in everything from bags, jewelry, shoes, and clothing. It looks especially pretty as an accent color with white or yellow. For example, a nice white sundress or blouse with azure blue bag or jewelry. Many designers have incorporated the color into their collections. These are some of my favorite pieces that I have found online to put into a concise blog post as fashion inspiration. If you are packing for a summer vacation, considering splurging on some azure blue pieces for your wardrobe!

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, National Day

First, Coach has used the azure blue color in some of their bags this season. This bag is a solid blue example of the popular color.

Find it here:

But my favorite summer Coach bag may be this this cheerful color block bag with the azure blue incorporated into its design along with bright pink, yellow, and white. It is a great statement piece.

Find it here:

Speaking of summer vacations, if you are going to the beach this summer this Kate Spade bag is super cute. I like the unique seahorse pattern.

Find it here:

Or, if you would like something a little bit more professional this Kate Spade bag would work with business casual dress code.

Find it here:

I am also loving this nautical theme, azure blue wrist watch. I always love a good watch.

Find it here:

Kate Spade also has some gorgeous azure blue/turquoise jewelry this season. These earrings are lovely.

Find them here:

I really love the floral statement necklaces that Kate Spade is known for. This one is so pretty and delicate.

Find it here:

I also love long dangling earrings.

Find it here:

I like this multi-strand necklace, too.

Find it here:

And this cute dress.

Find it here:

And finally, Kate Spade is doing a lot of ear crawlers this season. I like these blue ones.

Find them here:

This Charles David pumps are currently on sale for 60% off.

Find them here:

I also love this azure blue and white bohemian maxi dress by Dodo Bar Or. It would be perfect for hot summer BBQs or days on the beach.

Find it here:

This dress by Roland Mouret is also lovely albeit for more formal occasions than a day at the beach.

See it here:

If you would like to treat yourself to a Fendi bag, they have also been inspired by azure blue this season. This tote bag has Fendi’s signature ‘bag bug’ embroidered on the side. It’s big enough to fit a laptop inside.

Find it here:

This Zac Posen backpack bag has a sleek, modern design in the pretty blue shade that is so popular this season.

Find it here:

And finally, for a more formal bag I love this beautiful embellished Emilio Pucci clutch.

Summer Earring Trends

Hello Ladies! I am feeling inspired by some of the cool earring trends I am seeing in the mall, online, and on my favorite celebrities and thought I would write a blog post about it. So here are some of my favorite earring trends and where to find them!

Crawlers/Ear Pins

So the first type of earring I would like to talk about is an ‘ear crawler’ sometimes known as an ‘ear pin’. On a recent trip to the mall I found some pretty floral Kate Spade earrings and I couldn’t stop thinking about them after I came home. You know when you fall in love with something in a store but don’t buy it so you come home and kick yourself afterwards? That’s what I did. It was only when I went home and searched for the earrings online that I realized they weren’t ordinary earrings, but ‘ear pins’. Meaning that they are made with a longer, pin like back that runs up the length of your ear. Here are two pictures of Emma Stone and Emma Watson wearing ear crawlers/ear pins to show you what I mean.

I absolutely love this trend. I think part of the reason why I like it is because I am too chicken to get my ears pierced more than once so these earrings allow you to experiment with the earring going up the length of your ear without actually having to go through the pain of getting your ears pierced again. LOL

Here are some of the Kate Spade ear pins from the Spring/Summer 2016 season. I love the feminine floral look of these.

Find them here:

Find them here:

These are the same exact ear pins I found in the mall that inspired me to write this post. I love floral jewelry and I love how sparkly these are.

Find them here:

Then these ear pins have pretty variegated gemstones.

Find them here:

And I love this pink version!

Find them here:

These pretty ear crawlers are by Sole Society and also have a floral design.

Find them here:

I like these ear pins with an arrow design by BCBG Max Azria. Plus, they are on sale for $19. Score!

Find them here:

These cool ear crawlers by Nadri are also on sale right now. They are 50% off. I like the multifaceted stones.

Find them here:

These ear crawlers have a similar semi-precious stone design, but they also have a cool hanging chain on either side. I think they’re pretty and they are also 50% off!

Find them here:

I also like this cute pair of ear crawlers that look kind of like peacock feathers. They are also by Nadri.

Find them here:

And the last pair of ear crawlers I like are by Marchesa. I like pearls, and these ear crawlers offer a modern twist on a classic.

Find them here:

Ear Jackets

The next trend in earrings that I am really liking right now is ear jackets. There are many different styles and variations of this particular trend. Here are pictures of Jennifer Lawrence modeling ear jackets for Dior, and another picture of Jennifer Lopez showing off some ruby ear jackets on a red carpet.

I’m gonna start with Kate Spade again because I am really loving Kate Spade right now. As I previously mentioned, I love pearls. I also love lots of color and these ear jackets offer a little bit of both.

Find them here:

And here are a similar pair in pink.

Find them here

These pearl ear jackets by Kate Spade are on sale. I like the star burst pattern.

Find them here:

And I can’t get over how cute these ‘oopsie daisy’ ear jackets are.

Find them here:

I also love these ‘bee happy’ ear jackets. Too cute!

Find them here:

These crystal ear jackets by Marchesa are simple and lovely.

Find them here:

And these beautiful Marchesa ear jackets are in a lovely light blue. I like to call it “Cinderella blue” because it reminds me of the color of the dress that Cinderella wore in the Disney cartoon. It’s one of my favorite colors!

Find them here:

These ear jackets are little bit different from the others I have posted so far. They have a nice dangle to them. They are by Vince Camuto.

Find them here:

And finally, I like these pretty ear jackets by Rebecca Minkoff. They are currently on sale for $20.

Find them here:

Another trend that I think is really fun is a mismatched look. This trend is straight out of the 80s. I like that it is fun and unexpected and that there are many different ways to engage with this particular trend. This is Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, one of my all time favorite royal ladies. I am a BIG fan. If you are not familiar with the Swedish royals, she is the sweetest person.

Victoria has a penchant for statement earrings. These pictures are from a few years ago when she was visiting a fashion exhibition in Sweden. I like that she was gutsy enough to wear mismatched earrings as royal women can be a bit conservative with their style, in general.

For this 80s inspired trend, I recommend Betsy Johnson who tends to love creating 80s inspired jewelry in general. She has some really cool mismatched earrings that remind me of Victoria’s. These are lovely with their purple and pink stones.

Find them here:

These are also from Betsey Johnson. I love the swan and feminine pink design.

Find them here:

Oscar de la Renta is also producing some jewelry incorporating a few different trends in one. This pair of earrings includes one small earring and one large ear pin giving it a fun mismatched look.

Find them here:

Or, if you would like to try something a little more understated, you could try this cute pair of earrings with a heart and an arrow by Kate Spade. Very romantic and sweet.

Find them here:

Just like the pair b y Oscar de la Renta, these earrings include one tiny stud and then a larger statement piece. However, this is an ear cuff, not an ear crawler. It is on sale for $19.90 by Express.

Find them here:

Here are some other Betsey Johnson earrings in a different mismatched style.

Find them here:

And the last earring trend that I am really loving right now is colorful or gemstone earrings. I am going to use Princess Victoria for inspiration again. Firstly, there is this lovely picture of her wearing multi-colored, multi-faceted earrings. I believe that they may be Tiffany and Co, but I am not sure.

And most recently, Victoria posed for adorable newborn baby pictures with her son, Prince Oscar. I love the long gemstone earrings she wore to match the pale blue of her blouse and her son’s sweater. Just lovely.

These are a pair of faceted, multicolor earrings similar to the ones that Victoria wore in the first picture. These are from Tiffany and Co which is what leads me to believe that Victoria’s are as well.

Find them here:

And here are a lookalike pair that I found that are significantly less expensive.

Find them here:

Are really love this gorgeous pair of Swarovski crystal earrings in all of the colors of the rainbow. They would go with any outfit!

Find them here:

And this sweet pair of multicolored gemstone earrings is just $12.

Find them here:

And these Betsey Johnson earrings are nice and colorful as well.

Find them here:

And these cute colorful earrings from JC Penney are on sale for only $9!

That’s all folks! Hope you liked these earrings. Don’t forget to like My Frugal Lady on Facebook and subscribe to this blog for more neat stuff.

How to Dress Like a Princess for Prom for $100

Prom season is almost upon us, which means many young ladies will be searching for the perfect prom dress. Unfortunately, I never went to a prom myself. But if I had I would have probably looked to European royal ladies for inspiration. I think we all would like to look like a princess for a day, but most of us do not necessarily have a royal budget. So here are some of my favorite royal ladies wearing their best gowns along with a guide for where to find similar gowns for much less. Whether you are going to a prom, a formal wedding, or a romantic date every woman deserves to look and feel like a princess. 🙂

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

By now, most people who follow the British royal family will be familiar with Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge’s love of lace. This Alice Temperley black lace overlay dress has been one of her favorites for years. Here she is wearing the gown at the Natural History Museum in London in December of 2013.

And here is a close-up of the lace details on her dress.

Embed from Getty Images

This particular Temperley gown is no longer available although when it was available it probably sold for about $8,000-$9,000. However, I have found a gorgeous lookalike dress by Miusol for under $100. It comes in sizes small to 3X and you could get the black version that looks exactly like Kate’s or a red version for something a little different. It also has amazing reviews.

Miusol Women’s Floral Lace 2/3 Sleeves Long Bridesmaid Maxi Dress, Black, Large

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands

On April 30, 2013, Crown Princess Maxima became Queen Consort Maxima of the Netherlands when her husband, Willem-Alexander, was inaugurated as king. For King Willem-Alexander’s inauguration, Maxima wore a gorgeous cobalt blue gown and matching cape by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau.

Here is a look at the gown without the cape.

I love this color and the lace overlay detailing of the bodice and sleeves. Maxima’s gown was custom made for her, so there is no way to really put a price tag on it. But this pretty gown looks similar to Maxima’s iconic inauguration gown and it is under $100.

Sizes 2 through 16 can be found via this link:

Babyonlinedress Navy Blue Long Prom Lace Dresses Evening Gowns with Sequins

Crown Princess Victoria

Princess Victoria of Sweden is one of my favorite royal ladies. I think she is going to be an amazing queen. I also think she is very fashionable. I think this look is one of Victoria’s best. She is wearing a gown by Pronovias and a hair accessory by Jenny Packham, one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s favorite designers. The gown is an unusual color, it can appear teal or green depending on the lighting in the photo.

But I especially like the lace detailing on the neckline of this gown. It makes the sweetheart neckline seem a little more modest but still youthful.

And the hair accessory is so great. It looks regal, but not as formal as a tiara.

Here is a pretty green lookalike gown for under $100. I think it’s very elegant.

Find it here for under $100 in sizes up to a 16. It has multiple color options as well.

If you would like to wear a pretty hair comb to accessorize I like this one at Nordstrom.

Find it here:

Princess Madeleine of Sweden

Princess Madeleine, who happens to be Victoria’s little sister, has also worn some pretty amazing gowns. I guess style must run in the family, and it helps that she is married to a billionaire. 😉 Here is Madeleine wearing a gorgeous Elie Saab gown. It has a retro 1940s feel with some amazing beaded work throughout the gown. This is a couture piece and probably cost about $8,000-$10,000.

Princess Madeleine

When it comes to reasonably priced beaded gowns, I think that Adrianna Papell is the best way to go. This beautiful gown is on sale right now. It goes up to a size 14.

Find it here:

And this Adrianna Papell gown looks a lot like Madeleine’s gown as well. It is also on sale and is available up to size 14.

Find it here:

Princess Beatrice of York

Some ladies may prefer wearing a shorter dress for a school dance. I personally love this gorgeous Nicholas Oakwell couture white organza dress that Princess Beatrice wore to a Serpentine Gallery party. It has a lovely princess-y 1950s vibe. If you have ever watched West Side Story, you’ll know that Natalie Wood’s character, Maria, originally objected to wearing a white dress to a dance. But when she realized that probably no one else would be wearing white, she changed her mind because she knew that she would be the only one in a white dress so she would stand out more. So maybe white would be the right way to go if you want to make a bit of a fashion statement?

I also like the way that Beatrice styled her makeup with this dress. The red lipstick with subtle eye makeup completes the retro look.

Here is a pretty dress from ASOS that reminds me of Beatrice’s. It’s only $114 and is available in limited sizes.

Find it here:

The same company also makes some pretty dresses in plus sizes. This dress is similar to Beatrice’s and it is available up to a size 20.

Find it for $116 here:

Princess Sofia of Sweden

Next, we have Princess Sofia of Sweden. Like Kate Middleton, Sofia was also born a commoner. She was lucky enough to find an Orlando Bloom lookalike who just so happened to be a prince. 🙂 She marred Prince Carl-Phillip last year. Carl-Phillip and Sofia are expecting their first baby any day now.

I like the raspberry color of this gown that Sofia wore at the Nobel Peace Prize banquet in 2014.

I think that this lace dress from Modcloth is a similar color. Very feminine.

It is available in sizes 2-10 here:

The same company makes a similar dress in a 3/4 sleeve version available in sizes 8-20.

It is available on sale for $87 here:

Queen Mathilde of Belgium and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark

Speaking of Princess Sofia, at Sofia’s wedding to Carl-Phillip last year two very fashionable royal women showed up to the wedding ceremony wearing the same color. This pretty, icy light blue was also worn by the Queen Mother and Princess Diana on multiple occasions. Maybe because it photographs well? Or maybe it is because this is the color that Cinderella is associated with? Whatever the case, this color seems to be universally flattering on ladies with various hair colors and skin tones.

This dress comes in a ‘sky blue’ color that is reminiscent of the gowns that both Mathilde and Mary wore to Sofia’s wedding last year. It comes in sizes 2-18.

Find it here on sale for $89:

I hope that these royal ladies inspire you when shopping for your prom or special occasion dress. Don’t forget to ‘like’ My Frugal Lady on Facebook! 🙂

Princess Victoria’s Tassel Earrings

January tends to be a pretty slow month, fashion wise. I think maybe most royals tend to go on vacations to Mustique or Ibiza or someplace warm after the hectic Christmas season. I’m not sure, but royals seem to be in hiding right now. In addition to that, shops are either empty or full of leftover winter clearance items in order to make way for upcoming Spring collections. For my part, I have been visiting local shops and researching pre-Spring runway fashion on the internet to try and predict what this Spring has in store for us so I can plan my Spring fashion blog posts.

I am not sure which designer originally came up with the trend of tassel earrings, but I do know that Oscar de la Renta seems to be the one who popularized it. And it doesn’t look like this trend is going away any time soon with de la Renta’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection featuring lots of tassel earrings in a variety of colors. Pink, teal, white, and lots of other light, pastel colors perfect for Spring. As I looked through the collection I recalled seeing at least one of my favorite royal ladies wearing tassel earrings: Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. I think she is such a sweet person and very fashionable, too. After a bit of searching I managed to find the picture and it turns out that she was in fact wearing Oscar de la Renta earrings and she likes them so much she’s worn them at least twice. Behold! 🙂

I don’t normally like to rush out and buy ‘trendy’ items since many trends go in and out of fashion in a blink of an eye, but I really like the idea of tassel earrings. I think it’s cool. So I have decided that I will probably treat myself to a pair of tassel earrings this Spring. Here are some of the Oscar de la Renta earrings for Spring/Summer 2016.

See them here at Moda Operandi:

These earrings by the same company are the same price. I really like the bright colors. Perfect for Spring.

Royal Coats and Jackets: Fall/Winter 2015-16

Now that it’s November 1st, it’s starting to get chillier. Meaning that we should all get our winter coats out of storage and get them ready to be worn again. If you are like me, you probably have at least one (or two) black coats that you have worn for a few years in a row. I have had mine for maybe four years. But everyone seems to wear black coats and jackets during winter. So if you would like to treat yourself to a new coat this year-and one that isn’t black-the royal ladies throughout Europe know a thing or two about picking a fashionable coat. After all, they have to wear coats-or coat dresses-many times. And in colder countries we see royal women wearing coats all year long to official engagements. So who better to look to for some shopping inspiration?

Cobalt Blue

First of all, too many people shy away from wearing a colorful coat. Perhaps because we tend to try to save money by buying coats that are in neutral colors like black or brown because we think that they will match with more outfits. But don’t be afraid of color! A blue coat can go with so many different things. Just think about how people wear blue jeans with shirts and blouses that are all different colors of the rainbow, right? Cobalt blue is a classic choice for Fall/Winter and is so often seen during the Holiday season at all of the Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, or New Years parties because it is bright and festive but not too trendy. Just take a look at the Duchess of Cambridge wearing her Reiss coat at a Rugby match last month.

Kate Blue coat rugby

And flash back thirty years to Diana, Princess of Wales wearing the same color in this coat dress. She often wore this shade of blue because it matched her sapphire jewelry and brought out the pretty blue color of her eyes.

Princess Diana cobalt blue dress coat

And a few years ago Crown Princess Mary of Denmark wore a pretty cobalt blue coat with a jeweled neckline.

Princess Mary cobalt blue Klein coat dress concert Melbourne

As you can see, Mary has very fair skin while Diana had blond hair and Kate can get pretty tan when she gets some sun although you may not be able to tell from her picture from the Rugby match. But in general, cobalt blue is a color that is flattering for lots of skin tones and hair/eye colors. Kate’s Reiss coat seems to have sold out and Mary’s is no longer available but here are some pretty alternatives.

Princess Mary cobalt blue Klein coat dress

First, this Double Cloth Lady Day Coat by J. Crew comes in 11 colors including this pretty blue. It is also available in petite, tall, and regular sizes which is nice. I’m 5 ft tall so I always appreciate it when a designer takes height into consideration.

Then, this BCBGeneration zip trench coat comes in cobalt blue and is currently 33% off via this link on Nordstrom. I love BCBG and so does the Duchess of Cambridge.

Plaid is very, very ‘in’ this season. Just look at Kate Spade’s Fall/Winter collection this year. I happen to like plaid. And if you decided to buy a plaid coat for this winter it isn’t too trendy that you wouldn’t be able to wear it for a few winters in a row. Unlike those suede coats that we saw on so many runways this season which will probably not last more than one year. The minute you get suede wet in the rain you regret buying it. 🙂

Here is Kate again wearing a plaid coat in neutral blue/gray.

Duchess of Cambridge plaid Moloh coat

And Princess Victoria of Sweden wore black/white plaid about a year ago. I love her!

Crown Princess Victoria Malene Berger coat

And another picture of Diana, who is such an amazing style icon. She wore this pretty oxblood plaid skirt dress to the Highland Games during her first official visit to Balmoral after her marriage. Such an appropriate choice for a Scottish appearance.

Here is a plaid Vince Camuto coat at 50% off that’s in neutral colors sort of like Kate’s.

Then there is this Michael Kors plaid toggle coat. I like the mix of forest green and navy blue and it is also currently on sale.

And lastly, this DKNY double breasted plaid trench coat has a cool retro feel. I think it is my favorite choice for the plaid section of this blog. There is something very ‘modern working woman’ about this coat. Like something Lois Lane would wear. 🙂

Pink Coat

Now I know pink isn’t for everyone, but hear me out. Considering how most people wear black coats, black boots, and black bags during the winter if you walk into the room with a pink coat you would really stand out. Look how elegant Queen Maxima looks here. (Plus, pink and black look good together. So if you buy a pink coat and accessorize with black boot and a black bag it would look really good).

Queen Maxima pink coat day after coronation

And Jackie Kennedy’s favorite color was pink because she thought it was very French. I know she is not royalty, per se, but she is the closest thing we have had to American royalty. And look at how gorgeous she was in pink.

Now, tweed done right is normally pretty expensive. Like these coats that Princess Mary and Queen Maxima wore.

Maxima’s is Chanel. And we all know that Chanel is synonymous with tweed coats and skirt suits.

About three years ago I decided that I wanted to try something different and I bought myself a pretty fire engine red Guess coat sort of like what Princess Mary is wearing in this picture. I absolutely love it and get lots of compliments on it. A nice deep, bold red is so great for the dreary, snowy winter months. It’s also festive for the Holidays. Many, many royal women have multiple red coats in their wardrobes. This is just an example.

Princess Mary

Princess Victoria is seen wearing this red coat in 2011 that she has worn multiple times and lent to her knew sister-in-law, Princess Sofia, just a few months ago. I think it is so sweet the sisters-in-law share clothes. Have I mentioned that I love Princess Victoria, yet? ❤

And red has always been Queen Letizia of Spain’s favorite color. She wears it well, too. It’s very flattering on her.

Out of all of the royal women, no one has more experience with keeping warm during the winter then Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway. Living in Tennessee I can’t even imagine how cold it must get up in Norway! Although I did once go to Alaska as a little girl. And when I did I dressed in a quilted coat just like Princess Mette-Marit. It is the most practical thing to do and Mette-Marit is very practical when it comes to the clothing she chooses. She puts warmth first. Of course, I still feel that quilted jackets can be both practical AND fashionable as Mette- Marit has shown on multiple occasions. But if you live somewhere where you expect to gets lots of snow this winter, this is the type of jacket I recommend you purchase.

This DKNY quilted down and feather filled coat looks very warm. This one runs large and is meant to be worn with lots of layers so this is the type of coat you need if you are going to be spending the winter somewhere really, really cold with lots of snow. It’s very practical AND it’s 33% off.

Finally, I like this Lauren by Ralph Lauren belted quilted jacket. This piece is probably the most stylish quilted jacket I have found so far. I think that the belt and the fitted structure makes it a little sexy while still being extra warm.

Winter White

A white coat is just as neutral as a black one. But I think that people tend to stay away from white because of that “no white after Labor Day” ‘rule’. For the record, you absolutely CAN wear white after Labor Day. And it happens to look very stylish with something like a skirt or dress in fire engine red or cobalt blue for the holidays.

Princess Mette-Marit Valentino coat

The same Worthington coat that I choose in pink also comes in ivory. It’s 50% off and is very chic.

If you are looking for a neutral, simple color in addition to your black or brown coat look no further than this pretty camel color. I have a camel coat as well and find that it goes with any color scarf or brooch that I want so I can mix and match as much as I like. That’s because camel is lighter than black or dark brown so brooches, scarves, purses, or gloves ‘pop’ more against the light background. See the contrast between Princess Mary’s purple accessories and her simple camel coat? This is another piece that you can add to your winter wardrobe and wear for years. It doesn’t go out of style.

This Romwe camel v neck long sleeve coat is on sale for $72. ($72!!!) It has a great classic structure with pretty buttons along the sleeves. It’s lovely.

Like brown or black, gray is an ever dependable neutral color for coats or jackets. Princess Mette-Marit favors a gray, white, and navy color palette during the winter. She is seen here wearing a pretty expensive Burberry coat in gray.

Out of all of the coats I found for this blog post this beautiful cape trench coat from White House Black Market is one of my favorites. It’s also on sale! I can imagine wearing this with a chic bag and cool sunglasses. It’s so beautiful!

And finally, this Soia and Kyo hooded cape coat is in an amazing ‘oxblood’ red for just $73. I love it! It kind of reminds me of Maxima’s but for a fraction of the price.

Royal Fashion Trend Fall 2015-Hand Painted Dresses

I have noticed a pretty cool trend going around in royal fashion circles this fall/winter season. Royal women are wearing hand painted gowns or dresses for special events. Some of these pieces are gorgeous, and the fact that they are hand painted makes each piece seem more personalized. Fashion IS art, of course, but there is something about hand painted clothing that just emphasizes this fact. It’s like wearing a canvas. I think it’s really cool. Here are two main examples of royal women wearing these hand painted pieces this month (October, 2015)

First, Princess Madeleine of Sweden chose this hand painted Valentino dress for her son’s christening. I think it’s beautiful, very autumnal. Just perfect for October.

This dress is called the “Bambolina” brocade ‘angel wing’ print dress. You can see a short sleeve version of the dress via the Saks Fifth Avenue link below. Of course, Valentino is a very expensive designer. But I enjoy looking at pictures of his work anyway just to appreciate the artistry.

But what’s really cool is that Valentino made a jacket this season with the same ‘angel wings’ hand painted print on it. If I had the money I would buy this jacket in a heartbeat since you can typically get more use out of a jacket than a dress. I would wear it all fall.

Another royal woman who appreciates hand painted fashion is Queen Maxima of the Netherlands who has recently been hospitalized for a kidney infection. She became ill during her recent tour of China. But she managed to make an appearance at the state banquet in Beijing before traveling back home for treatment. If I had not read that she was ill I would never have guessed it from these photos because she looked beautiful. The gown that she chose for the occasion is a Mattjis van Bergen creation inspired by Van Gogh paintings. I think it was a very appropriate way of incorporating a Dutch design into her gown on an official state visit. The bottom of her dress has a lovely woodland scene painted onto it. Her Majesty chose to accessorize her new gown with the Dutch Emerald Parure. I love emeralds so I particularly love this set that belongs to the Dutch royal family. So elegant.

Queen Maxima State Banquet

Although Queen Maxima’s gown is impossible to find, and even if I could find it it probably would be an astronomical price in the tens of thousands, I have found some other hand painted pieces that are more affordable.

Firstly, a ‘splurge’ for me would be this Carolina Herrera abstract paint print jacquard dress.

Then this awesome painted floral print Chloe dress is on sale in limited sizes. It’s my favorite.

This Chetta B paint streak scuba sheath dress is not really painted but it has an abstract, paint streak pattern that is reminiscent of the hand painted look of the other dresses featured in this article.

This Karen Kane painted canvas faux wrap dress is very figure flattering and is between $50-$80.

And this Nic and Zoe hand painted twist dress is in a nice dark color for fall/winter.

And this Alexander McQueen creation from the summer is now on sale in limited sizes,

This Marc New York print twill fit and flare sheath dress with pockets is nice and youthful.

It has stripes that look like they have been painted on with brush strokes although it is not a hand painted dress so it is less expensive.

You can find it here for $128:

I think that Princess Madeleine and Queen Maxima’s fashion choices this month is a good indication that we will probably see some more hand painted pieces on royal ladies during the busy holiday season.

Princess Sofia of Sweden-Gucci Silk Crepe Pussy Bow Dress

On October 11 Princess Sofia of Sweden attended her nephew’s christening. Her husband, Prince Carl Philip, was named little Prince Nicolas’s godfather. Since the christening Sofia has announced that she is expecting a little prince or princess herself this April, just one month after her sister-in-law, Princess Victoria, is due to give birth. So exciting!

Princess Sofia just married into the Swedish royal family this summer and I have to say that I have been very impressed with how she has conducted herself since becoming a royal. She seems to be a humanitarian with a special interest in children and has also spoken about the Syrian Refugee crisis. I think she is doing meaningful work and has made the transition into royal life very easily.

Here are some pictures of Sofia at Nicolas’s christening. She is seen wearing a silk crepe pussy bow dress by Gucci.

Here is the same dress she wore along with a link for where you can find it.

Gucci Silk Crepe dress

Net-A-Porter says that “Gucci’s silk-crepe dress has a chic plum hue that complements any skin tone. This flattering and feminine style is finished with a pussy-bow collar, padded shoulders and a defined waist. Godet pleats through the skirt ensure elegant movement as you walk.” Although Gucci calls the color of this dress ‘petunia’ I like to think of it as raspberry.

I have found a Gucci lookalike raspberry silk crepe pussy bow dress by Giamba.

If you would like something in a similar style that is not as expensive this Thomas Maier pussy bow shirt dress has the same retro, vintage feel as Sofia’s dress. And purple is a good color for fall.

Seeing Sofia wear a pussy bow dress two weeks ago reminded me of how many royal women have chosen to wear pussy bow dresses or blouses in the past. They seem to come back in style every few years because they are a classic, ladylike, modest look. Here is a picture of Princess Diana for her engagement photo shoot wearing a pussy bow blouse with a skirt suit in 1981.

And here we can see the Duchess of Cambridge wearing a cobalt blue pussy bow blouse in her official portrait by Paul Emsley.

The Queen’s granddaughter, Zara Phillips, wore a pussy bow blouse and a bubble skirt to Royal Ascot in 2008.

So here is a collection of some pussy bow blouses for this season that are inspired by royal women’s love of the ladylike look. First, some ‘splurges’:

Fall Fashion-Princess Victoria of Sweden

My next installment of ‘Fall Fashion’ will be about Princess Victoria of Sweden. I think she seems to be a very affectionate and loving woman and a really good mother. I just find her so likable and I think that she will make a great queen. I cried when I watched her wedding to Prince Daniel years ago because she just seems like such a warm person. I think her love story with Daniel is so romantic! She makes Sweden proud. 🙂

I have admired Victoria’s grace in her position (which must be very stressful) and how she handles her responsibilities as the future queen since I was a teenager. So I am excited to put together this blog post highlighting some of her recent outfits that she has worn during official events the past few fall seasons. I love seeing how women dress while they work and I think she is always very professional and put together.

Let’s start with this pretty skirt and blouse combo that Victoria wore last September to a seminar in Stockholm.

I love the light blue lace skirt she is wearing here but I think my favorite thing about this outfit is the statement necklace. Here is a closer look.

Embed from Getty Images

I think what I like most about it is the light orange flowers in the necklace. As I said in my first post on Fall Fashion featuring Princess Mary of Denmark, I think orange is a great fall color and it is really fashionable this year. Here is a pretty necklace I found in the same color scheme as Victoria’s plus it also has pretty pearls surrounding the flowers. You have to click on the picture and get a close-up view of it to fully appreciate the details of the necklace, but the smaller flowers that look like they are sparkly-gold are actually full of rhinestones. I just love it! It would look great with a lighter blouse like Victoria wears or even paired with a sweater. So cute! And it’s only $14.99! I want it! 🙂

The next outfit that I chose for this blog also comes from September of 2014. This time Victoria attended an awards ceremony for children.

Again, I love how Victoria wears such pretty bold skirts. But I also really like the shoes she wears here. Here is a better picture of her shoes so you can see what I mean.

Embed from Getty Images

I like the sexy, strap-y look of these high heels. I found a similar pair by Steve Madden at a reasonable price and I think they would look especially gorgeous with red painted toenails. They are a great way to show off a good pedicure.

Browsing through all of the pictures of Victoria’s past fashion choices I can’t help but feel that she really knows how to accessorize her outfits! In this picture she is once again wearing a great skirt (this time a sparkly, sequined number). But I am going to focus on her clutch because goodness knows I love a good handbag. And this one is Zebra print! How fun!

Embed from Getty Images

After searching around I found this great Zebra clutch from Guess for $32. I really like it and think it would look good with lots of different outfits.

To prepare for fall I like to look at the coats that royal women wear since they have so many of them in so many colors. I already have a good black winter coat, a camel colored coat, and a red one for when I am feeling a bit adventurous. 🙂 But I really love the color of this coat that Victoria wore in November of 2009. It’s a pretty navy blue color. Navy blue is still a neutral color like black or brown that goes with pretty much everything yet it would make you stand out from the crowd since most people choose to wear black coats as soon as it gets cold outside.

I like these two examples of good fall coats in a similar color to what Victoria wore. First there is this aptly named “Victoria” coat by BGSD for $99. It has large military style buttons and is very much in style right now. It reminds me of the navy blue Zara blazer that is one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s favorite pieces of clothing.

Here is a picture of Kate wearing her Zara blazer to show you what I mean!

Embed from Getty Images

On the other hand, I also like this navy blue London Fog trench coat if you are looking for a different type of coat to add to your wardrobe. I think a trench coat is a staple item of clothing that every lady should have in her closet.

Last but not least I would like to show you an example of Victoria’s evening wear during the fall. Here she is attending the Polar Music Prize in August of 2014.

Embed from Getty Images

Love how the dress has a classy, vintage 1950s vibe to it.

Embed from Getty Images

I found this beautiful lace overlay Vera Wang gown that has a similar large white rose pattern against a simple cream backdrop. Nobody does lace quite like Vera Wang considering her expertise is in wedding dresses. So pretty!

I hope that you have had fun looking back on some of Princess Victoria’s fall fashion. Stay tuned for the next installment!

Royal Children’s Back to School Fashion-Part Two

Today is the Sunday of tax free weekend where I live in Tennessee. Every year this is when hoards of people flock to the mall to buy back to school clothes, so I thought this would be a good time to take a look back at how royal kids from around the world dress on their first day at school. In part one, I talked about the royal children of Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands. Now I will take a look at some other royal kids starting with the Swedish royal family.

Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel brought their pretty little girl, Princess Estelle, to her first day of preschool last year. Here’s the picture:

Embed from Getty Images

Princess Estelle always looks so happy in all of the pictures I see of her and her parents obviously adore her. I think she is probably one of the most confident and happy royal children. I love seeing pictures of her.

As a side note, do you guys see how similar Princess Victoria’s blazer is to the beloved blazer by Zara the Duchess of Cambridge loves to wear? Take a look:

Embed from Getty Images

They’re both dark blue blazers with large gold buttons. They have a nautical/military look to them and both royal women paired their blazers with jeans and wore their hair pulled back. It must be a popular royal look. 🙂 I am not sure if Victoria’s blazer is Zara as well, but Kate’s definitely is so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. Kate really loves Zara and has worn the brand many times before and after her marriage. Here is a similar Zara blazer. It is not the same one Kate wears because it sold out (anything Kate wears sells out within 24 hours!). But it has the same structure, navy blue color, and large gold buttons on the backs of the sleeves. Moms deserve to treat themselves to a nice outfit to bring their kids to their first day of school, too. Right ladies? 😉

The royal family of Japan (like the Spanish royals) send their children to private schools where they have to wear uniforms. Here are some pictures of Japanese royal children on their first day of school.I can’t believe how grown up Princess Aiko is. And I feel like Prince Hisahito was born just yesterday!

Not every royal family has a tradition of taking pictures of their kids’ first day of school but the British royal family has some great pictures of these events. Most of the current generation of royal children are too young to be in school (like the Cambridge’s kids and Zara Tindall’s children) but here is a look back on British royals and their first day from the previous generation.
This is a sweet picture of Prince William on his first day of nursery school. He reminds me so much of Prince George! I imagine this is what George will look like on his first day in a year or two.
Embed from Getty Images

I cannot get over how adorable Harry is in this picture from 1989. He always had such a mischievous personality. I bet he kept Diana on her toes. Love the way Diana is looking at her boys. She seems so proud.
Embed from Getty Images
Here is a picture of Princess Eugenie with her mom and dad, the Duke and Duchess of York. I never realized how much Eugenie looks like her dad but boy she does take after him.
Embed from Getty Images
And then there is this picture of Prince William on his first day at St. Andrews University in 2001. I had such a crush on him during this time, you guys. I was 11 years old. 🙂 William’s casual style really hasn’t changed all that much since this picture was taken. This is pretty much the way he dresses when he is not participating in royal events or official functions. He’s a laid back guy.

And it looks like Ralph Lauren is still making this same style of pullover to this very day, too:

UPDATE! January 6th, 2016

Today is the day that little Prince George of Cambridge began his school career at a small Montessori school near the Duke and Duchess’s home, Anmer Hall in Norfolk. Instead of inviting photographers to watch George enter the preschool, William and Kate opted to share two pictures of George’s first day via social media. Here they are!

Prince George first day 1

George is pictured standing in front of a large mural that is painted on the side of the tiny school. There are only about 30 students who attend in total.

Prince George first day 2

I think he looks like a mix of both William and Kate. Adorable! 🙂

I hope that you enjoyed these posts as a look back on how royal kids dress on their first day of school. If you have kids or are getting ready to go back to school yourself, good luck and have fun!
