Emma Watson’s Favorite Beauty Products

The five year old little girl in me squealed in delight when I saw the new Beuaty and the Beast teaser this week. I am beyond excited to see Emma Watson as Belle when the film premieres next year. So I thought I would put together a little post in honor of this new sneak peak at the film. This post highlights Emma Watson’s favorite beauty products.

According to a Twitter post that Emma shared in 2014, these are some of her favorite beauty products:

RMS Beauty Living Luminizer

According to this product’s description, the luminizer acts as a highlighter to illuminate your skin. Gisele Bundchen is a fan as well.

Batiste Dry Shampoo

This is a relatively inexpensive product, being only $9, but sometimes the least expensive products can be the best! You can carry this dry shampoo in your purse for a quick touch up.

Find it here:

Dior Skinflash

This is a pretty and useful highlighter by Dior. I love all of Dior’s products so I don’t blame Emma for liking this one so much!

Benefit Pocket Pal

Emma is also a fan of this cool Benefit lip tint plus gloss.

BeautyBlender

A BeautyBlender is also on her list of must have. Lots of people recommend this product as it is very popular right now.

Find it here:

Fresh Skin Soother After Shave

Surprisingly, this Clarins after shave is one of Emma’s favorite products. I suspect that she probably uses it on her legs which is actually a really good idea.

Find it here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=18241022&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

And according to an interview she gave with Marie Claire, these are some other products she also enjoys:

Lancôme Varnis In Love Nail Polish in Gris Angora

Emma said in her interview that she doesn’t typically like to paint her nails bright colors because she worries that the color won’t go with all of her outfits. But she said she loves this gray color because it will match more clothes. I think this is a pretty alternative to black nail polish, that may be more harsh against pastel Spring and Summer clothing, yet it is still neutral enough to go with many different outfits.

Mason Pearson Brush

Emma said she loves this brush so much that she bought one for herself and her sister. Apparently it is one of the very best out there.

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=96021167&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Lancôme Bi-Facil Eye Makeup Remover

Emma likes Lancôme a lot, and this makeup remover is her favorite. I always, always make sure to remove my eye makeup before bed.

Find it here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=4883076&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

L’Oréal Pairs Colour Riche Lip Liner in Nudes for Life

This was a surprisingly one. Emma said in her interview with Marie Claire that she recently worked with a makeup artist who lined her lips perfectly with a nude lip liner. I normally use a darker lip liner one shade darker than my lipstick because I have a freckle on my lips I try to cover up but I think that this nude lip liner trick would work well if you are just going to use some pale gloss or a lighter lipstick.

Find it here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=22851652&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Lancôme Rouge in Love Lipsticks

Emma says that she loves easily these lipsticks glide onto her lips. They have some beautiful, classically feminine shades that I really want to try now that I have discovered Emma likes them.

Find it here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=326697173&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Luzern Pure Cleansing Gelee

Emma also said she was a fan of Luzern products, particularly this cleansing gelee.

Find it here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=477924042&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

And finally, my favorite part of this post is Emma’s favorite perfume which is Be Delicious by DKNY. I always love reading about celebrities favorite scents. This is the official description of the scent: “A modern feast for the senses. Served in a sleek metal and glass apple bottle, this juicy fragrance combines the scent of apple with a sophisticated blend of exotic flowers and sensual woods. Like the city that inspired it, Be Delicious celebrates individuality with refreshing spirit.”

I hope that you enjoyed reading about Emma Watson’s favorite beauty products! I can’t wait to see Beauty and the Beast when it finally premieres next year. 🙂 Don’t forget to like My Frugal Lady on Facebook!

Summer Earring Trends

Hello Ladies! I am feeling inspired by some of the cool earring trends I am seeing in the mall, online, and on my favorite celebrities and thought I would write a blog post about it. So here are some of my favorite earring trends and where to find them!

Crawlers/Ear Pins

So the first type of earring I would like to talk about is an ‘ear crawler’ sometimes known as an ‘ear pin’. On a recent trip to the mall I found some pretty floral Kate Spade earrings and I couldn’t stop thinking about them after I came home. You know when you fall in love with something in a store but don’t buy it so you come home and kick yourself afterwards? That’s what I did. It was only when I went home and searched for the earrings online that I realized they weren’t ordinary earrings, but ‘ear pins’. Meaning that they are made with a longer, pin like back that runs up the length of your ear. Here are two pictures of Emma Stone and Emma Watson wearing ear crawlers/ear pins to show you what I mean.

I absolutely love this trend. I think part of the reason why I like it is because I am too chicken to get my ears pierced more than once so these earrings allow you to experiment with the earring going up the length of your ear without actually having to go through the pain of getting your ears pierced again. LOL

Here are some of the Kate Spade ear pins from the Spring/Summer 2016 season. I love the feminine floral look of these.

Then these ear pins have pretty variegated gemstones.

Ear Jackets

The next trend in earrings that I am really liking right now is ear jackets. There are many different styles and variations of this particular trend. Here are pictures of Jennifer Lawrence modeling ear jackets for Dior, and another picture of Jennifer Lopez showing off some ruby ear jackets on a red carpet.

I’m gonna start with Kate Spade again because I am really loving Kate Spade right now. As I previously mentioned, I love pearls. I also love lots of color and these ear jackets offer a little bit of both.

Find them here:

And these beautiful Marchesa ear jackets are in a lovely light blue. I like to call it “Cinderella blue” because it reminds me of the color of the dress that Cinderella wore in the Disney cartoon. It’s one of my favorite colors!

Find them here:

Mismatched

Another trend that I think is really fun is a mismatched look. This trend is straight out of the 80s. I like that it is fun and unexpected and that there are many different ways to engage with this particular trend. This is Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, one of my all time favorite royal ladies. I am a BIG fan. If you are not familiar with the Swedish royals, she is the sweetest person.

Victoria has a penchant for statement earrings. These pictures are from a few years ago when she was visiting a fashion exhibition in Sweden. I like that she was gutsy enough to wear mismatched earrings as royal women can be a bit conservative with their style, in general.

For this 80s inspired trend, I recommend Betsy Johnson who tends to love creating 80s inspired jewelry in general. She has some really cool mismatched earrings that remind me of Victoria’s. These are lovely with their purple and pink stones.

Find them here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=498365372&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

These are also from Betsey Johnson. I love the swan and feminine pink design.

Oscar de la Renta is also producing some jewelry incorporating a few different trends in one. This pair of earrings includes one small earring and one large ear pin giving it a fun mismatched look.

Find them here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=521962671&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Or, if you would like to try something a little more understated, you could try this cute pair of earrings with a heart and an arrow by Kate Spade. Very romantic and sweet.

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=505878834&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Just like the pair b y Oscar de la Renta, these earrings include one tiny stud and then a larger statement piece. However, this is an ear cuff, not an ear crawler. It is on sale for $19.90 by Express.

Colorful/Gemstone

And the last earring trend that I am really loving right now is colorful or gemstone earrings. I am going to use Princess Victoria for inspiration again. Firstly, there is this lovely picture of her wearing multi-colored, multi-faceted earrings. I believe that they may be Tiffany and Co, but I am not sure.

And most recently, Victoria posed for adorable newborn baby pictures with her son, Prince Oscar. I love the long gemstone earrings she wore to match the pale blue of her blouse and her son’s sweater. Just lovely.

These are a pair of faceted, multicolor earrings similar to the ones that Victoria wore in the first picture. These are from Tiffany and Co which is what leads me to believe that Victoria’s are as well.

Find them here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=519049057&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

And here are a lookalike pair that I found that are significantly less expensive.

Will and Kate’s India and Bhutan Tour Highlights

After a whirlwind week, Will and Kate’s tour of India and Bhutan is over. This blog post will be dedicated to Kate’s fashion moments from April 11-16. For my blog post on Kate’s arrival in India and her first few outfits visit here. I also wrote a separate post on her Jenny Packham gown from the ‘Bollywood Dinner’ which you can find here. 🙂

April 11, 2016

On April 11, Will and Kate spoke with tech entrepreneurs, visited India Gate, and paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi. The first photos I saw of this event were of Kate and Will meeting with a man who invented a machine that automatically makes dosa for breakfast in the morning after you pour batter into it. I think it must be set on a timer like when you time your coffee at night before you go to bed and then it just brews itself automatically in the morning. Dosas are kind of like Indian crepes. William tried to make one himself but then when he offered it to Kate she didn’t want to try it. Some people in India are saying that this came across as rude, as you are not supposed to turn down food when your host offers it to you. But I suspect that it may be because Kate doesn’t like to be photographed eating because that can result in some really unflattering pictures. Heaven knows the press have had a field day with Camilla whenever she eats something. They always print the most unflattering pictures of her afterwards.

William was shown the 'dosamatic' machine which makes pancakes, crepes, dosas and omelettes when automatically loaded with batter

Not so keen: After trying his creation, William offers Kate a bite, however the famously slim royal waved the food away with her hand

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrive at an event to meet aspiring young entrepreneurs in Mumbai on the second day of their tour

Kate wore a white midi-dress by Emilia Wickstead for 1,700 pounds for the first events of the day. That translates to more than 2,000 US dollars which I honestly think is a bit overpriced for such a simple dress. I like the collar and the overall shape and structure of the dress and I think it is an appropriately modest length although the fake pocket flaps on the busts may have been better if they were positioned on the skirt of the dress itself. I like dresses with real pockets in the skirt and think it can be really cute. My first impression of the dress was that Kate probably chose white to keep cool in the Mumbai and New Delhi heat. However, the dress is actually wool-crepe, so it is debatable as to how cool (temperature wise) the dress could actually be. She accessorized with an oatmeal/almost nude Mulberry clutch and light pink/almost nude Rupert Sanderson pumps.

This dress by Warehouse from ASOS has a similar Peter Pan collar and looks kind of like Kate’s but the flap pocket detailing is on the skirt. It’s only $47.

Find it here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=474832371&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

I’m pretty sure these are Kate’s Rupert Sanderson pumps. But all of her shoes look alike so it is hard to tell sometimes.

See them here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=512218254&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

These Michael Kors pumps look very, very similar and are a fraction of the price.

See them here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=295758594&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Like many other fashion bloggers, I would really, really love to see Kate experiment a bit more with her shoes and bags. She has dozens of nude or basically nude colored clutches and pumps. A clutch bag is not always appropriate for day wear and sometimes an outfit needs a splash of color. I understand that Kate had to pay respects at India Gate, which is the Indian equivalent to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, so she may not have wanted to be too loud with her fashion on this day. But it would have been fine to wear a navy blue bag and shoes or maybe even just a darker shade of pink. Not too bright, just enough that the color picks up well on camera and it contrasts against the white dress. Otherwise, the outfit looks too washed out.

Maybe something like these navy pumps by Charles David Pact? These are under $100 and are still a ‘safe’ color for Kate if she didn’t want to be too colorful.

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=409671457&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Or maybe this shade of pink from Christian Louboutin. It would have photographed better than the light pink pair that Kate wore that basically just looked like all of her nude shoes.

See them here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=505292178&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

By now most people who have been following the Cambridges know what happened at India Gate. Kate’s dress flew up as she was walking and while she was trying to place the flowers. I won’t sugar coat it, this was pretty embarrassing. And a so called “Marilyn Monroe” moment couldn’t have happened at a more inappropriate time. I admit that I have had a sudden gust of wind blow my skirt up before. It is really embarrassing. The queen always takes certain precautions with her wardrobe. She wears weights in her hems, but she also has her dresser, Angela Kelly, make slips that go underneath her skirts that are the same color as her skirt. It is important for Kate to wear a skirt that is fitted more closely to her body when she is going to be outside the way the queen does and she should also have weights sewn into her hems. And always, ALWAYS wear underwear because Kate has been photographed without underwear while working at an official event. Most royal women have had their skirts fly up once or twice by accident, but Kate has had it happen too often over the past five years so something needs to change. The Indian press was deeply offended and it reflects badly on the Queen.

Happy Birthday, Gran! Kate and William use a sword to cut a special cake for the Queen at a party to celebrate her 90th in New Delhi

At the very end of the second day of their tour, Will and Kate attended a garden party in honor of the Queen’s 90th birthday. Kate got a chance to cut a cake with a sword, which sounds like fun. 🙂 Then she and Will mingled with the 2,000 guests that included people from the realm of academia, business, politics, and the military. Kate wore a Temperley London crop top and skirt by Alice Temperely. To my knowledge, Kate has never worn something like a crop top and maxi skirt quite like this before and I like it when she tries something different. I like the black embroidery on the white dress, but again I wish she would accessorize differently. A red clutch and red shoes would have contrasted well against the stark black and white of this ensemble or really any other color would have worked for that matter. The black and white is a blank slate kind of like the white Wickstead dress she wore earlier in the day. Kate has so many black and nude clutches and purses she really doesn’t need to buy any more.

The Duke and Duchess will meet hundreds of guests from Indian society at the official garden party celebrating the Queen's 90th Birthday

Here is the top:

And here is the skirt:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=501290021&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Personally, this is my favorite dress from the Temperley Spring 2016 collection. I think Kate would look pretty in it if she wore a shell underneath or added some fabric to make it less low-cut.

April 12, 2016

Art class: The Duchess of Cambridge sat cross-legged as she drew pictures with some of the street children helped by the charity

A picture of a house drawn by the Duchess of Cambridge during her visit to a children's centre run by the charity Salaam Baalak in Delhi

Playtime: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge enjoyed a game of the traditional table game Carrom with street children in New Delhi

The events from the morning of April 12 have been some of my favorite from this entire tour not so much because of what Kate wore, but because of the activities that took place. I love children and have worked with them off and on for years so I loved being able to see Kate sit on the floor and play games and draw with the children. I would love to see her do this more.

Will and Kate visited Salaam Baalak Trust. This organization won the National Award for Child Welfare in 2011. This is a description of the organization from their website:

Salaam Baalak Trust is an Indian non-profit and non-governmental organization which provides a sensitive and caring environment to street and working children in Delhi, India.

We help nurture their dreams and make them realize that their fate can be crafted by their own heart, their own hands and a firm resolve.”

For the occasion, Kate wore a maxi dress by Glamorous, a British Label, that cost about $80. I think it was appropriate for Kate to wear something less expensive since her other clothing choices for the rest of the tour were pretty expensive, by and large. She wore the maxi dress with brand new Russell and Bromley flats. I’m glad to see she wore some flat shoes for this event because watching her play cricket in wedge heels made my feet hurt in sympathy pain! 🙂

Relaxed: Kate wore flat cream pumps underneath a long burgundy ethnic style dress with a belt tied around the middle

I’ve never been one to wear maxi dresses, mainly because I am only five feet tall and any maxi dress would drag on the floor on me. But I think they can be fun for some women who can pull it off. There is a bohemian free spirit vibe going on with this dress. I found one in a similar style by London Times on sale for $50. I live in the south so long sleeves like Kate’s aren’t really practical for the Summer.

Formal: Prince William (left) shakes hands with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he and wife Kate arrive for lunch in New Delhi

The Duchess of Cambridge smiles during a photo opportunity at Hyderabad House in New Delhi

Later that same day, Will and Kate met with the Prime Minister of India, Naranda Modi to have lunch. Kate changed into a Temperley London dress in a really pretty jade color. I think that this color really suits Kate and it is a color I would wear myself. I also like that she wore her hair up and I wish she would have worn it up more throughout the tour in general. However, I don’t think the bodice of the dress is fitted properly. As it turns out, the dress was originally completely transparent in the front with the original model showing off some serious cleavage. So Kate’s assistant helped her add ‘modesty panels’ to the dress so that it would be appropriate for her to wear for this lunch. I believe that in placing these modesty panels the dress lost some of its original structure and pulled on her bodice in an unnatural way. So I would love this dress if it had been tailored properly to fit her better around the chest area.

Kate was also sporting some new Kiki McDonough earrings. McDonough is one of Kate’s favorite jewelry designers. The press are reporting that these earrings may have been a ‘push present’ given to Kate after Princess Charlotte was born. But while Charlotte’s birthstone is an emerald, these earrings are green tourmaline and amethyst.

Red carpet welcome: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are greeted with a ceremonial welcome as they arrive at Tezpur Airport in Assam, India, on day three of the Royal visit to India ahead of their visit to the world's largest one-horn rhino park

After their lunch with the Indian Prime Minister, Kate and Will flew to Assem where they were greeted with a campfire celebration.

The Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William watch dancing by the fireside during a Bihu Festival Celebrationat Diphlu River Lodge on day 3 of the royal visit to India and Bhutan

Kate arrived in the same dress she wore to lunch with the Prime Minister but she quickly changed into a maxi dress by Anna Sui. The dress’s design was inspired by mid-century Scandinavian styles. I felt like there was a lot of pattern going on in one dress. Kate chose to wear Wedges, which quickly became muddied. I wish she would have worn some sensible sandals.

When it comes to shoes, I would have opted for really simple black sandals because of how busy the print is on the dress. I also probably wouldn’t have worn anything too expensive. Something like these H&M sandals for $14.99.

April 13, 2016

On April 13, Kate and Will took a Safari tour of Kaziranga National Park. They got to feed baby elephants and rhinos with giant bottles, which is basically my dream. It’s just too gosh darn cute!!!

Animal doctor: Kate nurses a baby elephant back to health at a sanctuary helping animals who have been injured, displaced or orphaned

The sanctuary provides emergency care and rehabilitation to wild animals that have been injured, displaced, or orphaned in the wild

The Duchess of Cambridge arrives in Pan Bari Village, Assam, India, during day four of the royal tour to India and Bhutan

Kate wore an embroidered dress by Topshop and wedges. Again, I kind of feel like sandals or flats of some kind would have been more practical but maybe Kate’s ankles are just stronger than mine are!

The dress that Kate wore is no longer available but here is another embroidered smock dress by Topshop for $68.

See it here:

Then William and Kate went on a safari. It felt a little bit more like a vacation than an official tour to me at this point but that may be because William was originally scheduled to give a speech on poaching on this day but for some reason he didn’t. Maybe he ran out of time or something happened but I think if William gave a speech it would have felt more like an official visit and not just a vacation. I would have liked to hear some informational facts and figures concerning what Kaziranga does to help these animals. Unfortunately, the day after William and Kate’s visit a rhino was killed by poachers close by to where the royal couple went on their safari.

Kate wore a blouse that was given to her by RM Williams during her tour of Australia and New Zealand in 2014. She also wore one of her favorite pairs of earrings. Citrine drops by Kiki McDonough. Here are the same pair with blue topaz instead of citrine.

Kate wore some flats this time, though. She wore these Sebago Bala shoes.

April 14th, 2016

On April 14th, the Cambridges flew to Bhutan. They were greeted by Princess Chimi, the sister of the King of Bhutan, and her husband.

Kate wore an Emila Wickstead coat that she has worn before and probably purchased in 2012. I like the color of the coat. It’s a pretty soft yellow like buttermilk. But alas, she chose a beige clutch and nude heels. I have already established that I would like to see Kate experiment with her shoes and bags. But I will also add that I think this coat would have looked lovely with a pretty brooch. Kate was not loaned any jewelry by the Queen for this tour and it is not exactly clear why. But Kate does own at least one brooch of her own that she could have brought with her. She was last seen wearing it at Christmas.

The brooch is an oak leaf with little acorns on it because Kate’s family crest has acorns incorporated into the design. The brooch, being entirely diamonds with no other colored stones, may not have showed up well against the light yellow coat but it still would have added a little extra sparkle. In general I wish Kate would wear more brooches. She has a very large collection of coats and dress-coats that would look great with some pretty brooches. But I am of the opinion that as a duchess and future Princess of Wales Kate should wear more diamond jewelry than she does especially when she is representing the Queen abroad. She has been royal for five years now so I think it is a good time for her to start wearing more jewelry. Maybe William should buy her a new brooch as a gift for their five year anniversary?

After arriving in Bhutan, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met with King Jigme and Queen Jetsun. Kate changed into an interesting outfit. It wasn’t traditional Bhutanese clothes; rather, it was a skirt made in London by unidentified designer using fabric made in Bhutan coupled with a top made by Paul and Joe. I like the top, although the skirt had an awkwardly placed slit in the front that kept blowing open. I think that maybe it could have been designed differently to avoid that from happening. Or, Kate could have just worn traditional Bhutanese clothes. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

That night, Will and Kate attended a reception with the King and Queen. Kate wore a Tory Burch dress and a pretty orange shawl, a color she never wears. I thought she looked good in orange and would like to see her wear this color again especially in the fall.

Coincidentally, Drew Barrymore wore this same exact dress on the same day that Kate did.

I think I like this dress a little better with the added orange shawl.

April 15th, 2016

On April 15th, Will and Kate went on a hike to the Tiger’s Nest monastery in Bhutan.

So Kate wore a blouse, a waistcoat, skinny jeans, boots, and the citrine earrings I wrote about earlier. I’m not a hiking kind of a girl, but keeping in mind how incredibly hot it was in Bhutan and how difficult this particular hike is claimed to be (Prince Charles visited the Tiger’s Nest but never made it to the monastery, he only got half way) I am not so sure this outfit is right for the occasion. Throughout the tour I followed what royal reporters were saying on their Twitter pages and apparently I am not the only one to question this choice. Camilla Tominey, a royal editor for the Sunday Express who went on the hike with a press pack to photograph the couple, said “Having just done this hike, may I humbly suggest that Kate’s leather waistcoat is a tad misjudged. May also want to put her barnet up. #hot”

Kate’s ability to hike up a mountain with her hair down while wearing a leather jacket and not breaking a sweat after hours in the sun led the Huffington Post to question “Is the Duchess of Cambridge Human?” 🙂

After the hike the Cambridges attended another reception. Kate wore a Beulah London red poppy gown. The blue poppy is the national flower of Bhutan.

April 16th, 2016

The Cambridges saved the best for last. On their final stop on their tour, Will and Kate flew from Bhutan back to India to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra. I would love to visit the Taj one day. It is not only a monument to love, but an architectural masterpiece.

I absolutely love this dress by Naeem Khan. Truth be told, he is one of my all time favorite Indian designers. I wish that Kate would have worn one of his gowns for the Bollywood reception. He is fantastic. I believe that he has been compared to Oscar de la Renta and Valentino. Here is a link to an article from Vogue showcasing his pre-fall 2016 collection. I think it is so lovely and although it cannot be purchased yet I just love looking at the various pieces he has put together.

I think Kate chose this particular dress because the pattern is reminiscent to the famous engravings that decorate the Taj. It was a great choice. (I wish she wore blue shoes to match, but I’m gonna let that go. 🙂 )

I don’t believe that this dress is available anymore. But upon closer inspection, you can see that the dress on the model is shorter than Kate’s. It looks like the designer added an extra layer of design for Kate to make it come to her knees. I would absolutely wear this dress and I hope Kate isn’t afraid to wear it again because it was used for the iconic Taj Mahal photo. I’d love to see her wear it again with her hair pulled back and her sapphire and diamond earrings that match her ring.

So that’s all folks! I hope that Will and Kate will continue to fulfill more royal duties. Now that Her Majesty has turned 90 years old and the Duke of Edinburgh will soon be 95, it only makes sense that it is now the time to pass on more responsibilities to the younger generation.

William and Kate at Bollywood Gala

For the much anticipated “Bollywood Gala”, which may be the most glamorous event during the royal tour of India, Kate wore a custom, bespoke cobalt blue gown by Jenny Packham. Packham is one of Kate’s favorite designers and she often wears her creations for evening events. According to Simon Perry of People Magazine, this gown was hand beaded in India.

Here is a video of the very first glimpse of Kate and William arriving on the red carpet.

Here is one of the best images I have seen so far of Kate’s gown. This picture is from Filmfare’s twitter page. I really like this gown. This color suits Kate, the designer is appropriately British in keeping with Kate’s role as a representative of the British fashion industry, yet the gown is also inspired by Indian fashion which is what I was hoping for. The beading is lovely and it is appropriately modest. I also like that Kate has her hair styled up and away from her face.

Here is a close-up of Kate so you can see her earrings. According to Daily Mail journalist Rebecca English they were designed by Indian jewelry designer, Amrapali.

It seems that Kate is holding a clutch bag that was probably beaded and designed to match the dress. So I am going to say that it was probably designed by Jenny Packham as well although I don’t know that for sure yet.

I cannot find the same exact earrings that Kate is wearing. They may not be available anymore. But just to get an idea of what this jewelry designer is like here is a similar pair by Amrapali. Even though this particular pair of earrings is on sale they still cost a pretty penny.

William and Kate got to meet some really famous Bollywood stars like Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit, among others. Many of these actresses were wearing fabulous gowns as well. Unfortunately, the venue seems to have some lighting issues. Maybe it is just in the pictures I am seeing so far but the pictures have a strange red glow to them. Even the pictures of Kate on the red carpet were overly lit with camera flashes that seemed to be blinding William and Kate. I hope we get better pictures soon, but here are a few that I have found so far.

The people in the middle of this photo are Aishwarya Rai and Sharukh Khan, two of the biggest stars in India. This picture is a perfect example of that weird pinkish red glow that I was talking about. I hope that the lighting didn’t ruin all of the photos.

The best pictures so far are of William and Kate from Getty images. So here are a few more!

The reception took place at the same hotel that William and Kate are staying at tonight. Here are a few pictures from the hotel’s twitter page that show what some of the decorations were like for tonight’s event. I always think it’s neat to see these details.

And if you are curious about Jenny Packham, Kate’s go-to designer, here is a similar gown by Packham.

You can find this gown and others like it from Packham’s collection here:

Will and Kate Arrive in India

It has begun! Today is the first day of William and Kate’s tour of India, and we have already seen Kate model two different outfits. So let’s take a quick look, shall we?

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived in Mumbai today, April 10, 2016. This is the first royal tour for the couple in two years. They were welcomed at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel where they laid a wreath in memorial for the victims of a terrorist attack on the hotel in 2008. All pictures in this blog post are courtesy of the Daily Mail.

The couple arrived 20 minutes ahead of schedule on a British Airways flight from London with part of the 11-strong entourage that will accompany them on their seven-day trip to India and Bhutan plus a large security detail. They are pictured arriving at the Taj Palace hotel

A picture of the wreath they placed in memorial at the hotel.

Kate arrived at the hotel wearing a lovely bespoke Alexander McQueen dress. I thought it was appropriate for her to wear McQueen, one of the most famous British fashion designers, to represent the UK fashion industry as her first big outfit for the tour. Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen was also the designer behind Kate’s wedding gown. I am not sure if red is considered an appropriate color for laying a memorial wreath in India, but they most likely have different standards about that than we do where I am from in the U.S.

Plenty of thought: The Duchess blended Indian colour with British couture as she chose an Alexander McQueen dress for her arrival

The Duke and Duchess have left their children, Prince George, two, and 11-month-old Princess Charlotte, behind in the UK

Warm welcome: Kate is expected to showcase a number of Indian designers with her choice of outfits during the couple’s tour, but she played it safe with one of her favourite fashion houses for the country’s first sight of her. Locals gave the couple an enthusiastic welcome

Kate also wore her Temple of Heaven earrings, which she wore a few days ago to a reception at Kensington palace for young people from India and Bhutan. Here is a picture of her wearing the earrings today.

She also wore £1,495 earrings by Temple of Heaven

And here is a picture of her wearing the earrings at the reception.

Kate wore Gianvito Rossi patent-leather pumps with her McQueen dress.

Kate wore a pair of Gianvito Rossi courts (pictured), with a pointed toe, costing £445

Here is a similar pair from Gianvito Rossi:

Kate finished the look with a Russel and Bromley clutch.

Theme: Kate wore a red, paisley-themed outfit with a shirt split at the front over a black underskirt, borrowed heavily from Asian tradition

After arriving at the hotel, the royal couple had a quick outfit change before visiting the Oval Maiden in Mumbai, where they watched children play in a cricket match.

Looking relaxed: After leaving their hotel, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge headed to Mumbai's Oval Maidan, a Grade 1 recreation ground in the south of the city for a game of cricket with some of the city’s many thousands of street children

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

First of all, I really like the dress that Kate wore. I think it is pretty and colorful. I like the shades of pink/raspberry and light blue. But it looks really, really hot in Mumbai so I think it would have been appropriate for Kate to put her hair up before watching the match. As a woman with hair longer than Kate’s that’s the first thing I would have done. Plus, if Kate had pulled her hair back we could get a better look at the earrings she wore which were definitely not the Temple of Heaven earrings she wore with the McQueen dress.

Quick swap: Kate changed out of the Alexander McQueen dress she was wearing earlier in the day and into a more summery, relaxing outfit

This dress is a bespoke piece by Anita Dongre, an Indian designer from West Mumbai. According to Anita’s twitter, this piece is a Mughal inspired tunic. This is what the tunic originally looked like during Lakme fashion week, but as the piece is bespoke it was reworked a bit to suit Kate’s taste and needs. Specifically, Kate’s version appears to be considerably shorter.

The blogger “What Kate Wore” thinks that Kate may be wearing Mint Velvet shoes. I am not sure how practical wedge heels are to watch a cricket match but Kate famously ran on a beach in Australia in wedges so she must be steadier on her feet in heels than I am! 😀

Update

My goodness, Kate didn’t just watch a cricket match, she played with kids through an obstacle course while wearing a dress and wedge heels. I would probably break my ankle if I tried this!!!

Kate is known for being really sporty, though. So maybe it doesn’t bother her? Looks uncomfortable to me, but she seems to be enjoying herself! It’s nice to see her happy. She always seems happiest when she is playing sports. See more pictures from the Telegraph here.

Watch this space for more updates on William and Kate’s tour! Tonight, the Cambridges will attend a Bollywood star studded gala where Kate will wear a formal evening gown and I will be sure to write a post about that, so stay tuned and follow My Frugal Lady on Facebook!

How to Dress Like a Princess for Prom for $100

Prom season is almost upon us, which means many young ladies will be searching for the perfect prom dress. Unfortunately, I never went to a prom myself. But if I had I would have probably looked to European royal ladies for inspiration. I think we all would like to look like a princess for a day, but most of us do not necessarily have a royal budget. So here are some of my favorite royal ladies wearing their best gowns along with a guide for where to find similar gowns for much less. Whether you are going to a prom, a formal wedding, or a romantic date every woman deserves to look and feel like a princess. 🙂

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

By now, most people who follow the British royal family will be familiar with Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge’s love of lace. This Alice Temperley black lace overlay dress has been one of her favorites for years. Here she is wearing the gown at the Natural History Museum in London in December of 2013.

Embed from Getty Images

And here is a close-up of the lace details on her dress.

Embed from Getty Images

This particular Temperley gown is no longer available although when it was available it probably sold for about $8,000-$9,000. However, I have found a gorgeous lookalike dress by Miusol for under $100. It comes in sizes small to 3X and you could get the black version that looks exactly like Kate’s or a red version for something a little different. It also has amazing reviews.

Miusol Women’s Floral Lace 2/3 Sleeves Long Bridesmaid Maxi Dress, Black, Large

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands

On April 30, 2013, Crown Princess Maxima became Queen Consort Maxima of the Netherlands when her husband, Willem-Alexander, was inaugurated as king. For King Willem-Alexander’s inauguration, Maxima wore a gorgeous cobalt blue gown and matching cape by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau.

Here is a look at the gown without the cape.

I love this color and the lace overlay detailing of the bodice and sleeves. Maxima’s gown was custom made for her, so there is no way to really put a price tag on it. But this pretty gown looks similar to Maxima’s iconic inauguration gown and it is under $100.

Sizes 2 through 16 can be found via this link:

Babyonlinedress Navy Blue Long Prom Lace Dresses Evening Gowns with Sequins

Crown Princess Victoria

Princess Victoria of Sweden is one of my favorite royal ladies. I think she is going to be an amazing queen. I also think she is very fashionable. I think this look is one of Victoria’s best. She is wearing a gown by Pronovias and a hair accessory by Jenny Packham, one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s favorite designers. The gown is an unusual color, it can appear teal or green depending on the lighting in the photo.

But I especially like the lace detailing on the neckline of this gown. It makes the sweetheart neckline seem a little more modest but still youthful.

And the hair accessory is so great. It looks regal, but not as formal as a tiara.

Here is a pretty green lookalike gown for under $100. I think it’s very elegant.

Find it here for under $100 in sizes up to a 16. It has multiple color options as well.

Ever Pretty Womens Empire Waist Open Back Formal Black Tie Dress 16 US Green

If you would like to wear a pretty hair comb to accessorize I like this one at Nordstrom.

Find it here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=474618180&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Princess Madeleine of Sweden

Princess Madeleine, who happens to be Victoria’s little sister, has also worn some pretty amazing gowns. I guess style must run in the family, and it helps that she is married to a billionaire. 😉 Here is Madeleine wearing a gorgeous Elie Saab gown. It has a retro 1940s feel with some amazing beaded work throughout the gown. This is a couture piece and probably cost about $8,000-$10,000.

Princess Madeleine

When it comes to reasonably priced beaded gowns, I think that Adrianna Papell is the best way to go. This beautiful gown is on sale right now. It goes up to a size 14.

Find it here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=504486444&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

And this Adrianna Papell gown looks a lot like Madeleine’s gown as well. It is also on sale and is available up to size 14.

Princess Beatrice of York

Some ladies may prefer wearing a shorter dress for a school dance. I personally love this gorgeous Nicholas Oakwell couture white organza dress that Princess Beatrice wore to a Serpentine Gallery party. It has a lovely princess-y 1950s vibe. If you have ever watched West Side Story, you’ll know that Natalie Wood’s character, Maria, originally objected to wearing a white dress to a dance. But when she realized that probably no one else would be wearing white, she changed her mind because she knew that she would be the only one in a white dress so she would stand out more. So maybe white would be the right way to go if you want to make a bit of a fashion statement?

I also like the way that Beatrice styled her makeup with this dress. The red lipstick with subtle eye makeup completes the retro look.

Here is a pretty dress from ASOS that reminds me of Beatrice’s. It’s only $114 and is available in limited sizes.

Find it here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=463645159&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

The same company also makes some pretty dresses in plus sizes. This dress is similar to Beatrice’s and it is available up to a size 20.

Find it for $116 here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=517597790&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Princess Sofia of Sweden

Next, we have Princess Sofia of Sweden. Like Kate Middleton, Sofia was also born a commoner. She was lucky enough to find an Orlando Bloom lookalike who just so happened to be a prince. 🙂 She marred Prince Carl-Phillip last year. Carl-Phillip and Sofia are expecting their first baby any day now.

I like the raspberry color of this gown that Sofia wore at the Nobel Peace Prize banquet in 2014.

I think that this lace dress from Modcloth is a similar color. Very feminine.

It is available in sizes 2-10 here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=517836923&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

The same company makes a similar dress in a 3/4 sleeve version available in sizes 8-20.

It is available on sale for $87 here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=497738243&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Queen Mathilde of Belgium and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark

Speaking of Princess Sofia, at Sofia’s wedding to Carl-Phillip last year two very fashionable royal women showed up to the wedding ceremony wearing the same color. This pretty, icy light blue was also worn by the Queen Mother and Princess Diana on multiple occasions. Maybe because it photographs well? Or maybe it is because this is the color that Cinderella is associated with? Whatever the case, this color seems to be universally flattering on ladies with various hair colors and skin tones.

This dress comes in a ‘sky blue’ color that is reminiscent of the gowns that both Mathilde and Mary wore to Sofia’s wedding last year. It comes in sizes 2-18.

Find it here on sale for $89:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=510998931&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

I hope that these royal ladies inspire you when shopping for your prom or special occasion dress. Don’t forget to ‘like’ My Frugal Lady on Facebook! 🙂

Wonder Woman’s Perfume

She may not be a princess in real life, but Israeli actress Gal Gadot is portraying the most famous Amazonian goddess warrior princess of all time: Wonder Woman aka Princess Diana of Themyscira. To say I am excited is an understatement. I am a big Superman fan and even named both of my dogs in honor of the Superman comic books, but we have had numerous Superman movies AND Batman movies but no Wonder Woman film even though the Wonder Woman TV series in the 70s was really popular and Wonder Woman is one of the three most important founding members of the Justice League. I personally feel that is pretty unfair and we ladies are long overdue for a Wonder Woman film.

Picture from Gal Gadot’s social media, a sneak peak of Wonder Woman in her stand alone film which will premiere in 2017.

Wonder Woman is making her big screen debut today in Batman Vs Superman before she gets her very own stand alone film next year. (I have not been able to see B vs S yet, so please no spoilers in the comments section!) So, in honor of this major moment of cinematic history I would like to write a short blog post dedicated to the favorite perfume of the actress behind Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot’s fashion is not very well known just yet although I am sure we will see more of it now that she will be walking so many red carpets. However, I did manage to discover this short little interview on Youtube. In it, Gal divulges that her signature scent is Gucci Bamboo. I thought it was really great that she did not hesitate to name her favorite perfume since many women (especially women in the public eye) tend to be more tight lipped about what their favorite perfume is. But because I love perfume and write about it often, I decided to look up Gal’s favorite perfume.

Gucci Bamboo’s notes are official described as “Top notes of bergamot. Heart notes of casablanca lily and ylang ylang extra-comoros. Base notes of sandalwood.” I love Gucci purses with their signature bamboo handles, and this perfume comes with an equally iconic bamboo shaped bottle. Bergamot is one of my favorite scents and I like that this scent is anchored by the base note of sandalwood. It sounds like it would be a feminine, yet sexy scent. I am definitely going to track this one down and test it out.

Find Gucci Bamboo via this link on sale for a limited time:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=503555604&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

And I am going to finish this post by leaving you with this brand new picture released today of Gal with some of her co-stars (including Robin Wright) in a promo picture from the Wonder Woman film. Those costumes look fierce!

Queen Victoria’s Sapphire Coronet Tiara

In January of 2012, a beautiful sapphire and diamond tiara once belonging to Queen Victoria turned up in a private home in Highgate, UK.

To uncover the secrets of this mystery tiara and to understand how it came to be in possession of a private family rather than the royal family one must go back over 170 years to when the tiara was first created to trace its fascinating history.

Portrait of the young Queen Victoria (1819 - 1901), Franz Xavier Winterhalter, After

Franz Xavier Winterhalter’s portrait of Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert, the Prince Consort, was known for his keen eye for architecture, design, and art. He was instrumental in creating many of Victoria’s most beloved pieces of jewelry including this tiara which Victoria described as a “sapphire coronet” in her records most likely commissioned by Albert from jeweler Joseph Kitching circa 1840-1842 at the cost of approximately 450 pounds. It is a small piece in keeping with Victoria’s style and could be worn in a nontraditional way surrounding her chignon on the back of her head as one can see in the famous portrait above by Franz Xavier Winterhalter. The tiara features cushion cut and kite-shaped sapphires set in gold while the diamonds are set in silver in a neo-Gothic trefoil pattern typical of its time. The small structure suited Victoria because she was a very petite woman at only 5’0″ tall. Albert was also undoubtedly aware of Victoria’s issues with migraine headaches which meant that she preferred wearing lighter tiaras in order to avoid triggering a migraine.

Queen Victoria’s Engagement Ring

Victoria was a very romantic and sentimental woman. Albert himself was also a hopeless romantic and he designed many pieces of jewelry for Victoria that held symbolic meaning, including jewelry made of their children’s baby teeth. Victoria’s famous engagement ring was a serpent, an ancient symbol of protection. A serpent or dragon eating its own tail-known as a ouroboros – or depicted in a circular pattern as with Victoria’s ring is also a symbol of eternity. This ring features Victoria’s birthstone, an emerald, as the centerpiece and rubies for the serpent’s eyes. Albert often designed jewelry with rubies to symbolize passion and diamonds to symbolize eternity, since diamonds are the hardest stone and therefore nearly impossible to break. Turquoise and pearls were seen as representing romantic love so they were often used in weddings. Victoria gave each of her bridesmaids a gift of a turquoise eagle brooch seen below.

Royal Bridesmaids Brooch

Brooch, 1847

Queen Victoria’s brooch with her daughter, Princess Vicky’s baby tooth

But for Victoria’s wedding gift, Albert gave her a magnificent sapphire brooch surrounded by diamonds that is reminiscent of the style of Diana, Princess of Wales’ engagement ring which now belongs to Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Queen Elizabeth II wears this brooch often. Queen Victoria is Queen Elizabeth’s great-great-grandmother so I am certain that this wedding brooch holds a great deal of significance to her.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Royal Ascot in 2015 wearing Victoria’s wedding brooch

Victoria proudly wore her brand new brooch on her wedding day to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha on February 10, 1840 as you can see in the portrait above. I personally believe that Albert created the sapphire tiara to match the brooch that he gave his new bride.

After Prince Albert’s death on December 14th, 1861, Victoria went into mourning for the rest of her life. Therefore, she often did not feel that it was appropriate to wear ostentatious jewelry or bright colors. But this diminutive sapphire coronet was deemed appropriate for Victoria to wear in later life due to its small size.

Queen Victoria with her sapphire tiara

After Victoria’s death in January 1901, the sapphire tiara was not seen for two decades as Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary preferred to wear more substantial pieces. It was next seen in 1922 when the tiara was given to Princess Mary-daughter of King George V and Queen Mary-as a wedding present along with a matching parure comprised of a bracelet and necklace. Princess Mary married Viscount Lascelles, who would eventually inherit the earldom of Harewood making Princess Mary the Countess of Harewood.

Princess Mary died in 1965, leaving Victoria’s tiara to her husband and children. Subsequently, the tiara was worn by Patricia Lascelles, the Earl of Harewood’s second wife.

The last time that the tiara was pictured being worn on a member of the Lascelles family was in 1992 when Andrea Lascelles married the Earl’s fourth son, Mark.

The tiara was seen in public in 1997 after Geoffrey Munn wrote to the Earl of Harewood telling him he was putting a collection together for an exhibition at Wartski’s. The tiara was again exhibited in 2002 at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

George Lascelles died in 2011, making his son David the current Earl of Harewood. Since 2002 the fate of the sapphire tiara and matching parure has been convoluted. It is possible that the necklace and bracelet were sold decades ago; however, the tiara managed to stay in the family. And that brings us to the day in 2012 when an anonymous family in Highgate loaned a tiara previously belonging to Queen Victoria that had not been seen in years to Geoffrey Munn, an expert in jewelry appraisal and history.

Since its rediscovery in 2012, the Victorian Sapphire Coronet Tiara has been most recently exhibited at the Winter Antiques Show in February of 2014 in New York.  Although I cannot be sure, I believe it may still belong to the Lascelles family unless they discretely sold the tiara along with the matching parure after George Lascelles death in 2011.

This tiara is a beautiful piece albeit it is comparatively small to other pieces created for Victoria by Prince Albert. Its whereabouts in 2016 are somewhat unknown to the general public. However, I feel that if it were at all possible it would be lovely to see this piece purchased by the Prince of Wales, who much like Prince Albert has a well known interest in jewelry and an appreciation for design. It would be fantastic to see this tiara reunited with Queen Victoria’s wedding brooch that Her Majesty is so fond of or perhaps it could be worn by the Duchess of Cambridge since it matches her engagement ring so well. But no matter what, I feel that the most appropriate thing is for this tiara to continue to be worn by direct descendants of Queen Victoria or their spouses. Considering how much this tiara meant to her I am sure that is what Victoria would have wanted and I hope that whomever owns this tiara now treats it like the priceless piece of history that it is.

Cheers!

Bal de la Rose March 19, 2016

The annual Rose Ball (AKA Bal de la Rose) was held tonight in Monaco. This ball has been a yearly tradition since Prince Ranier established it in 1954. It was subsequently popularized by Princess Grace (formerly Grace Kelly) after her marriage to Ranier in 1956. Today it is one of the most highly anticipated social events in Monaco and is primarily run by Grace’s children, Prince Albert and Princess Caroline along with Albert’s wife, Princess Charlene.

Here is a picture of Grace and Ranier at the Rose Ball. It as from her first year in attendance, 1956. I found the picture on “The Royal Forums” and it looks like it may have been scanned from a magazine or newspaper. The forum user named “Flowerpower” put her watermark on it so that explains why it looks this way. I don’t normally post pictures with watermarks but this one is rare and I thought my readers might like to see it.

I also found another picture from Grace’s first Rose Ball on pinterest. Again, it was probably scanned from a magazine so apologies for the poor quality but this is the only picture I could find in color. Grace looks beautiful, as always. I am not sure what the ball’s theme was in 1956 but her gown almost looks Grecian inspired plus she has a lace shawl draped on her shoulder.

Every year the Rose Ball is focused on-you guess it-roses. Lots and lots of really beautiful and fragrant roses. Plus the Rose Ball is always given a unique theme each year. Before Prince Albert got married his sister, Princess Caroline, was responsible for overseeing the organization of the ball and for picking the theme. The Rose Ball is a charity ball with all proceeds going to the Princess Grace Foundation. The foundation is described thus:

“The Princess Grace Foundation-USA is a non-profit, publicly-supported charity, headquartered in New York City and established 34 years ago by Prince Rainier III of Monaco to honor his wife, Princess Grace’s [Kelly] legacy. Our mission is dedicated to identifying and assisting emerging talent in theater, dance, and film by awarding grants in the form of scholarships, apprenticeships, and fellowships.”

The ball is always held in the Sporting Monte-Carlo Club ‘s Salle des Etoiles or “the room of the stars” in English. The room was given its name due to the fact that it has a retractable roof that allows you to see the night’s sky during the ball if the weather permits. Have I mentioned that Monaco has the most billionaires in residence in the entire world, yet? 😀

Here are some pictures of last year’s Rose Ball. The theme was “art deco”. In this picture you can see brother and sister, Prince Albert and Princess Caroline, arriving together. Princess Charlene stayed home with her four month old babies because one of her twins was sick. I like that Princess Caroline had her hair done in a retro, 1920s kind of way.

Here is Pierre Casiraghi and his wife, Beatrice Borromeo. Pierre is the grandson of Princess Grace and son of Princess Caroline (Caroline chose not to give her children titles). Beatrice’s gown was GORGEOUS last year and I think she did a fantastic job sticking with the Art Deco theme.

And here is Charlotte Casiraghi. She is Pierre’s older sister and a real star in Monaco and among royal watchers. She was wearing a pink and black couture gown by Chanel last year as she often does. I like the way pink and black look together because it is very French but this particular dress doesn’t feel very “art deco” to me.

For Rose Ball 2016, Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel (a close personal friend of Princess Caroline) helped to choose the theme and decorations. This year the theme is “Cuba” as you can see in these pictures just released this afternoon of people preparing the tables and decorations for the ball. Get ready for lots of pictures!!! 🙂

I am very interested to see how the royal ladies will interpret the “Cuban” theme into their gowns.

The first ladies to arrive were Charlotte Casiraghi and her little sister, Princess Alexandra of Hanover. This is the first time that Alexandra has attended the ball so this must be her big debut.

I think that Princess Alexandra looks very age appropriate tonight. She is 16 years old. I also think that it is sweet that the sisters walked the red carpet together. Charlotte has been very maternal towards her little sister since Alexandra was born and I have seen lots of pictures of Charlotte holding her and hugging her. Charlotte is 29 and Alexandra is her half sister which is why she has a title and Charlotte does not. But even though there is a bit of an age difference the sisters seem very close.

I like that Alexandra didn’t wear too much makeup or try and wear a dress that was too sexy for her age.

Now Charlotte…..I don’t really know what this cape thing is on top of her dress. I also feel that the dress is a little bit too tight and ill fitting for her and the material makes it look kind of like a night gown. I am pretty disappointed . I don’t want to be unkind at all, she always looks beautiful. She is probably one of the most naturally pretty royal women around. I just don’t like this dress and I don’t think it suits her at all.

The more I look at Charlotte’s dress the more I dislike it. It kind of reminds me of Halloween costumes that I would wear as a little girl if I was pretending to be a princess. And why in the world is she wearing those shoes? To be fair, it’s possible that she didn’t know how to interpret the theme. I do not know who designed her dress yet since these pictures were just released a few minutes ago online but I think it’s a safe bet that Karl Lagerfeld dressed both Charlotte and Alexandra.

Moving on, here is a picture of Pierre and his wife Beatrice. Now THIS is a ball gown. Wow!

I love the color, I love her necklace, I love it all.

Next, we have Andrea Casiraghi (Pierre and Charlotte’s brother) and his wife Tatiana Santo Domingo, who just so happens to be a billionaire from one of the richest families in Colombia.

As far as the Cuban theme goes, I think that Beatrice comes closest to that with her bold red dress. I am not in love with Tatiana’s dress. I think maybe there is just a little too much going on. I like the lavender color so maybe if she removed the black jacket I might like it better?

The information I am seeing right now indicates that Princess Charlene didn’t attend again this year. I am not sure why. But Princess Caroline is there with her brother, Prince Albert. They just arrived.

I think Princess Caroline looks elegant as usual. I don’t really see a Cuban theme incorporated into her dress but that’s ok.

It’s a shame that Princess Charlene isn’t there with her husband, Prince Albert. And I wish Princess Stephanie would attend as well. But I think it is nice to see the family continuing the tradition that Prince Ranier and Princess Grace started more than 50 years ago.

Cheers!

Duchess of Cambridge 2015 Diplomatic Reception

A few months ago when Kate was seen driving in the back of a car with William to Buckingham Palace for the annual Diplomatic Reception hosted by the Queen the press were quick to point out that this was the first time that Kate was seen wearing the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, also known as Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara. However, since we only got a couple of pictures of Kate in the back of the car, we didn’t really get a chance to see what her dress looked like.

At the time that these pictures came out the press was quick to point out how similar Kate’s gown was to one that Diana wore as if she was trying to look like Diana on purpose. They called her a “copycat” and said she was trying too hard to be like Diana. Here is a side by side comparison from the Telegraph to show you what I mean:

It turns out that there were documentary filmmakers at the reception who captured footage of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, and William and Kate for a documentary film called “Our Queen at 90” that will premiere on Easter Sunday, March 27th. Thanks to the Daily Mail, we now have one screen grab (as of the writing of this post on March 18th, 2016) of most of Kate’s dress the full view of her tiara. Here it is!

Now that we have a clearer picture of Kate’s gown we can make a better comparison with Diana’s gown. Besides the fact that they both have some lace I think they are pretty different. Kate’s is blue with lace paneling on the bodice and lace short sleeves while Diana’s is white and totally made of lace with long sleeves.

Kate’s gown for the reception is a bespoke piece from Jenny Packham, one of Kate’s favorite designers. I also recognize Kate’s bag. It’s the same one she wore when she went to a James Bond film premiere with William and Harry in October and is also made by Jenny Packham.

Since Kate’s gown was bespoke it cannot be purchased and it appears that her bag has also sold out. But here are some looklikes.

Edie Parker bag from Saks Fifth Avenue would be a nice splurge.

See it here:

This cute beaded and embroidered bag by Santi from ShopBop is also a nice option and is considerably less expensive. I like that there are beads of various sizing because it gives the bag a mosaic look.

Or this bag is a steal at just $35 from Charming Charlie. It has the same boxy structure and metallic, sparkly embellishment that Kate’s bag has (but WAY less expensive).

As for the dress, Kate tends to gravitate towards light blue in everything from dresses to coats to aquamarine jewelry. The Queen Mother is also known to have favored this color. This gown by Adrianna Papell is $200 dollars and looks like Kate’s style. This gown is available in sizes 0-12 and comes in this “seafoam” color or a blush-y pink.

Find it here:

Or if you want to splurge I think that the lace paneling, short sleeves, and A-line silhouette make this Burberry gown from Saks Fifth Avenue look very similar to Kate’s reception gown. This gown is available in limited sizes.

Find it here:

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=511888793&pid=uid9225-31713435-16

Kate and Diana both wore lace gowns that had scalloped necklines and I think that this dress by Tahari is similar. It is also reasonable being only $280. This gown goes up to a size 16, which is really nice.

See it here:

I can’t wait to see this documentary when it premieres on Easter. The Queen deserves to have a fabulous 90th birthday celebration and it is great to see her children and grandchildren being interviewed about her.

Cheers!
