When Oprah still had her talk show, I was always interested in seeing her “favorite things” episodes because I liked seeing what cool new gadgets or items she liked to use to see if I could try it for myself. Although I write about various royal women and sometimes other celebrities whose fashion I admire, some of my most popular blog posts are ones that I have written about the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton). I can see through my WordPress stats that the blog posts that I have written about her favorite makeup and cosmetics and posts I wrote last year about Christmas gift ideas are the ones most visited. I think people might really like to know specifically what Kate’s favorite things are. So I decided to write this blog post about some of Kate’s favorite things with either info on stuff that she loves and wears all the time that is just now available again or info about new stuff that these designers have made for the Fall 2016 season. If this post proves popular, I may make this into a series of blog posts on a few other women as well.
Bobbi Brown Makeup
So as I wrote about in my blog post about Kate’s makeup and cosmetics, Kate really likes Bobbi Brown makeup. Most of the makeup products she wore on her wedding day were by Bobbi Brown and people on Twitter have reported seeing her shopping at Bobbi Brown makeup counters for years since before she even got married. It has been five years since Kate got married and the way she does her makeup really hasn’t changed too much, leading me to believe she still favors Bobbi Brown. But I have noticed that the way Kate grooms her eyebrows is different. In pictures before she got married and when she was still a University of St. Andrews student, her eyebrows were thinner. But as eyebrow trends have changed now to favor thicker or more defined eyebrows Kate has also filled hers in more. This especially started to change when Kate did her Vogue cover.
So here are a couple of great eyebrow products by Bobbi Brown that I can imagine Kate using. This cool little compact has a nice brush and two different colors of powder for when you want to lightly fill in your eyebrows.
As a woman who has naturally thick and sometimes unruly eyebrows, my personal favorite eyebrow product is this eyebrow gel that you brush on with a wand that looks similar to a mascara brush. It keeps your eyebrows in place so nicely.
Bobbi Brown also has some really pretty makeup palettes this season. This is a great time to buy some new makeup because lots of makeup brands put together gift pallets in anticipation for the holidays. This one has both eye shadows and blushes. I can tell you that the eyeshadows in this palette look like ones that Kate wears. They are also nice neutral colors that I think would be flattering to women with any eye color.
According to the makeup artist who worked with Kate before her wedding day, one of Kate’s favorite products is the Bobbi Brown shimmer brick. This set includes the shimmer brick plus a really lovely, soft brush to apply it as bronzer or blush. I have also used the shimmer brick as eye shadow in the past.
Kate’s favorite jewelry designer is Kiki McDonough. I have written a blog post dedicated to her jewelry before that was popular. The earrings that Kate seems to re-wear the most are her citrine pieces. I think Kate must really love citrine. For a while her favorite citrine earrings were sold out. But now they are back!
To help us all get into the holiday spirit, here is the second installment of “Christmas Gift Ideas” inspired by royal women’s favorite things. In case you are shopping for a lady this year and need some regal ideas. Or, you could be a lady yourself who wants to conveniently share this blog post with your family and friends as a not-so-subtly hint about what you may like to receive this Christmas. 😉
Princess Victoria of Sweden’s Cameos
First of all, like many ladies I am obsessed with jewelry. I received a beautiful gold cameo necklace surrounded by pearls as a Christmas gift when I was 17 and it is one of my favorite pieces of jewelry. So when Princess Victoria of Sweden married her longtime love, Daniel Westling, in 2010 I was surprised to see her wear a gorgeous cameo tiara on her wedding day. Each individual cameo on her tiara on surrounded by pearls just like my cameo necklace which made me feel pretty special that I had something that looked royal, too. 🙂
This particular cameo necklace has been a traditional wedding tiara for many Swedish royal brides including Victoria’s mother, Queen Silvia. Apparently, this tiara was actually a gift from Napoleon Bonaparte to Empress Josephine so it has a long and romantic history. There are earrings to match, which you can see both Victoria and Silvia wearing on their wedding days, along with a necklace that Silvia is wearing in the more recent picture.
I love cameos because they add a touch of old fashioned romance yet they never go out of style because they are classic, elegant, and regal. Most royal families throughout Europe have cameos in their jewelry collection so it is an appropriate gift for a lady that likes a more classic or vintage style.
Here are some pretty cameo earrings. They are sterling silver and created white sapphire on sale for $32. Picture is a link.
I also really like these cameo earrings with dangling pearls.
Like most women, Princess Diana experimented with many different perfumes throughout her life. But according to her former butler, Paul Burrell, Diana’s favorite perfume after her divorce was 24 Faubourg by Hermes. Here is the official description for the fragrance:
“A novel composed by Maurice Roucel in 1995, 24, Faubourg is an invitation to travel, with the sun as its destination. A sparkle of white flowers in the top notes, the radiance of a floral heart enveloped in irises, woods and mystery, while vanilla and ambergris set the tone for the sillage.”
It would make a beautiful gift for anyone who loved Diana or for ladies who just enjoy elegant perfumes. You can find it here:
According to numerous sources like Women’s Day, Kate really enjoys using Urban Decay’s ‘Naked’ eye shadow palette. And she’s not the only one. “Naked” by Urban Decay has long been a favorite go-to eyeshadow palette for many celebrities. The pigments are neutral but long lasting. And it has 12 different colors which leaves room for some experimentation. It’s a really great palette.
According to the makeup artist who helped Kate with her makeup for her wedding day, Kate really loves Bobbi Brown’s shimmer brick in “Bronze”. I love it too and have used it myself in the past. But I didn’t know at the time that it was a bronzer so I used it as eye shadow and it was a really pretty light, shimmer eye shadow. So it can be used as both. Bobbi Brown also makes some lighter, pink shades for their shimmer bricks that can be used as a contouring blush or as eye shadow.
And finally, Kate loves Bobbi Brown’s “Crystal” gloss and wore it on her wedding day on top of her lipstick to give her lips some shine. One great tip that makeup artists have suggested when using this clear gloss is that you should use lip liner and lipstick as normal and the take this clear gloss and use it right in the middle of your lower lip to give the illusion of fuller lips. You can also use it all over your entire lips over lipstick as a way of toning bright or dark lipstick. Finally, this “Crystal” gloss can be worn by itself without any lipstick at all.
If you are looking for a good lipstick to go with Kate’s favorite clear gloss, according to an article by the Telegraph the Queen uses Clarins lipstick and has been seen applying it in public. She carries it with her in her handbag and will touch up her makeup in full view of photographers. See the article here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/queen-elizabeth-II/10987809/Whats-inside-the-Queens-1000-handbag.html
The lipstick that the Queen appears to be using is this one. She has always favored darker shades that flatter her fair skin.
And finally, I think that Crown Princess Mary of Denmark’s favorite Diane Von Furstenberg wool coat would make an excellent gift. Mary has such impeccable style and this coat has a great classic, simple silhouette that she has worn numerous times. Very chic.
And lo and behold, I have found the same exact coat for sale for 25% off in black AND red! Score!
Many years ago historians had to really dig to figure out what cosmetics products a royal lady used. But nowadays with Twitter, phone cameras, and the fast paced nature of the internet it seems like we can gather more specific information about what royal women buy. If a royal lady goes to the mall and buys a certain lipstick it’s a safe bet that someone was watching and took note of it. Or, in the case of the Duchess of Cambridge, it is possible that a makeup artist that worked directly with the royal may come forward and reveal all. I don’t like to pry too deeply into royals’ personal lives but I am very interested in different skin care products and makeup. So you can imagine that I was pretty happy to discover that some of the products that Kate uses I have used myself. I guess maybe I feel that my taste in makeup has been royally validated, you know? 🙂
So, without further ado, here are the Duchess of Cambridge’s favorite skin care, makeup, hair care, and perfume products and where to find them. Enjoy! And feel free to share this post on your Facebook so that your friends, family, and significant other can read it and get the hint that you may want to add these products to your Christmas wish list. 😉
Hair and Nails
I think that probably the most famous aspect of Kate’s iconic look is her thick, healthy, bouncy hair. Some fashion bloggers and critics on online forums complain it is too long or that they don’t like her ‘fringe’ (‘bangs’ to us Americans). But no matter what you think of her new haircut you have to hand it to her: Kate has really healthy hair.
According to many sources including an article from ‘The Royal Fans’ blog called “What’s in Kate Middleton’s Beauty Bag?” Kate’s hairdresser James Pryce from London’s Richard Ward salon says the Duchess uses Kerastase Hair Rituals products. Apparently her stylist recommended that she used the line’s shampoo and conditioner for ‘dry’ hair to maintain it’s moisture. It’s called “Kerastase Nutritive Bain Oleo-Relax Smoothing Shampoo for Dry and Rebellious Hair.” That’s quite a mouthful, but it seems to be working for her!
The shampoo is normally $56 but I found it for $20. Score!
And her conditioner is called “Fondant Nutri-Thermique Thermo Reactive Intensive Nutrition Conditioner.” It’s normally $58 but I found it for $30. It seems to be a good conditioner for people who blow dry their hair a lot which means it would be really good for the cold winter months when we are less likely to let our hair dry naturally:
It has been reported that Kate visited the Jo Hansford Salon in London to get a manicure before her wedding day and when she did her manicurist, Marina Sandoval, chose this light shade for Kate. It’s called “Allure” by Essie and Kate has used it ever since.
Kate’s favorite skincare products were recommended to her by her dermatologist and are by Karin Herzog, who specializes in “luxury anti-aging” products using active oxygen. Apparently, Herzog was a medical researcher in Stockholm, Sweden and then developed this skin care line after retirement. His official website states that “Karin Herzog is the worldwide leader in oxygen-based skincare. It is the only range formulated with stabilized active oxygen, which acts as a rocket booster, propelling essential nutrients to the collagen producing cells.” Sounds impressive. 🙂 Kate uses this cleanser:
I am obsessed with figuring out which perfumes royal women wear. I happen to believe that a woman’s scent says a lot about her personality. British royal brides tend to wear perfume by Creed but Kate broke from tradition and used a perfume by a relatively new perfumery. Her wedding perfume was “White Gardenia Petals” and was made by Illuminum. Since it was publicized that she used the scent on her big day the perfume has become very popular. However, it is still hard to find unless you order it online. No stores where I live have even heard of this perfume house. The perfume is official described as “a delicate and refined scent – the top note of lily evokes a nostalgic summer ambiance, whilst heart notes of gardenia, Ylang Ylang, lily of the valley and jasmine breeze are sumptuous and feminine. Amber wood underscores this light bouquet. ” From the description it sounds divine. This perfume is more expensive. However, this is probably because gardenia is one of the heart notes of the scent. Gardenias are my favorite flower and real ones smell beautiful. But anyone who knows anything about perfume will tell you that the scent of a gardenia is very hard to capture accurately in a perfume. That’s because gardenias do not have the same type of oil that other flowers like roses have. So the oil from Gardenias cannot be naturally extracted like roses or other flowers. Instead, the smell of a Gardenia has to be synthetically created. And if a perfume is cheap they will not be able to do this well. Only the best perfume houses like Creed, Guerlain, and Annick Goutal can do it right. So Kate must have felt that this perfume was up to par with other high end, luxury perfumes. It has received great reviews and is described as being very classy and romantic. Kate has worn it again since her wedding day so this perfume is supposed to be a good scent for special occasion or daily use.
So according to “What’s in Kate Middleton’s Beauty Bag?” Kate wears YSL’s Touche Eclat ‘miracle’ makeup pen. Apparently, Julia Roberts, Victoria Beckham, and Demi Moore also love this product. It seems to be a real celebrity ‘must have’ product. You use it as a highlighter or eye brightener.
And here is a nifty youtube video on how to use it:
For her wedding day, Kate chose to work with Bobbi Brown cosmetics which is great since I have some experience using some of the same Bobbi Brown products myself. The makeup brand was so thrilled to announce that they would be helping her with her bridal makeup that they released a sketch detailing exactly which colors Kate used for her big day. Here it is!
Here are all of the products in the same exact colors that Kate used on her big day which she has continued to use up until this very day.
She used “Ivory” eyeshadow as a base all over her entire eye lid. I would also use this as a highlighter under the eye brow or at the corner of the eye.
And then the next part makes me really happy, because Kate used a Bobbi Brown shimmer brick and I have used them before myself! On her wedding day, she used “pink quartz’ shimmer brick as a bronzer. However, I have used the shimmer brick in the past as a blush AND as eyeshadow. It actually can be used for a few different things. It’s also really popular with lots of celebrities like Celine Dion who reportedly gave a bunch of the women who worked with her during one of her world tours a Bobbi Brown shimmer brick as a present. It’s a really great product and would make a good gift!
Since Kate tends to accentuate her eyes most when she does her makeup she tends to wear very pale or neutral lipstick and gloss. I also think this may be because Kate has thin lips and when a person has naturally thinner lips wearing dark or red lipstick emphasizes that fact. So it makes sense for Kate to wear a lighter shade of lipstick. According to Bobbi Brown Kate wore “Sandwash Pink” lipstick on her wedding day, which is a really pretty, delicate color.
I hope you have enjoyed an insider’s view into what Kate uses to stay looking princess-y. Kate’s mother-in-law’s favorite brands and products will be the subject of my next segment of “Royal Makeup and Cosmetics” when I focus on Princess Diana. So stay tuned!
